The Paint Touch-Up Technician is responsible for performing detailed paint repairs and refinishing on aerospace components to ensure compliance with customer specifications and quality standards. This role involves identifying defects, preparing surfaces, applying coatings, and verifying finishes with a high level of precision and attention to detail.
Essential Functions

- Identifies and corrects paint defects such as scratches, chips, runs, and overspray
- Performs manual touch-up painting and surface blending on aerospace components using brushes, airbrushes, or small spray equipment
- Interprets engineering drawings, work instructions, and customer specifications related to paint applications and finishes
- Follows proper preparation procedures, including sanding, masking, and cleaning before paint touch-up
- Mixes and applies primers, topcoats, and specialty coatings per customer requirements
- Following customer specifications, documents touch-up operations, and any deviations or rework required
- Follows established work instructions and safety procedures, including the proper use of all required personal protective equipment (PPE) and the use, storage, and disposition of hazardous materials
- Maintains clean, organized workstation and properly handles hazardous materials in compliance with PPE and other safety regulations
- Performs routine equipment inspections and immediately addresses leaks, spills, or other issues, escalating concerns to Supervisor and/or Maintenance personnel
- Communicates professionally and effectively with Quality and Inspection personnel to ensure all repairs meet visual and dimensional standards
- May use cranes or other lifting and moving devices to rotate or move equipment and materials so that surfaces to be painted are accessible
- Uses brushes to paint by hand areas that cannot be adequately reached with a spray gun
- Performs any other duties as required
- Regular attendance on-site at the workplace is required
Required Education and Work Experience
- High School diploma or GED equivalent is required
- Vocational training in industrial painting or finishing is advantageous
- Work experience in a paint or processing role for metal manufacturing is preferred
- Familiarity with aerospace paint systems, such as epoxy primers and polyurethane topcoats is required
- Proficiency in basic computer use & navigation is required; must perform accurate data entry and demonstrate ability to navigate software, access information, and update work orders in ERP system
Other Required Skills and Abilities
- Fine motor skills and manual dexterity is required; ability to meticulously paint details or access difficult-to-reach areas on small or complex parts
- Experience reading & accurately interpreting shop blueprints, sketches, specifications, and other technical information/instructions is required
- Demonstrated basic math skills (add, subtract, multiply, divide, fraction conversions)
- Experience using mies, calipers, height gauges, and other precision measuring equipment is required
- Completion of assigned internal training for the role, and periodic retraining or recertification, is required
Physical Demands and Work Environment
To perform the essential functions of the role, employees must be able to perform the following activities with or without reasonable accommodations:
- Regularly stand and walk throughout the facility, stand for long periods to perform job duties
- Regularly lift, carry (short distances), and push/pull up to 100 pounds using peer assistance and/or other lifting & material-handling equipment
- Frequently reaches overhead and reaches out or down to perform duties
- Frequently climb steps, stairs, or ladders
- Frequently bend, crawl, stoop, squat, or kneel
- Frequently uses hand or fingers to manually inspect parts and operate sprayers and other machine and material handling controls
- Accurately distinguish colors to select and apply correct paints
- Visual acuity to interpret readings on gauges and other measuring devices
- Wears dust mask, respirator, and other PPE as required; pulmonary capacity testing may be required for respirator use
Working Conditions
Work is performed in a manufacturing shop environment where working conditions may vary significantly; the employee will be exposed to:
- Excessive noise (hearing protection required)
- Dust, smoke, mist, fumes/vapors(regularly)
- Extreme temperatures (occasionally)
- Hazardous equipment including forklifts, hand tools, cranes or other lifting devices, and other equipment used in a machine shop environment (continually)
The use of PPE, including hearing protection, eye and hand protection, respiratory protection, and use of safety footwear is required
