Position Summary

DEFINITION: Under supervision by appropriate supervisor in Facilities on the assigned shift, this position is to have charge of custodians performing routine and specialty cleaning work in assigned areas; participate in the cleaning work and coordinating and assisting the supervisor and promote the mission and vision of the college CLASS CHARACTERISTICS: Under minimal supervision, the incumbent will supervise and coordinate the workflow of custodians on an assigned shift; assigns special work as required; assumes responsibility for seeing that instruction of the Operations Supervisor and Custodial Supervisors are carried out efficiently. The incumbent will ensure that the areas for which they are responsible for are maintained in a clean, orderly and safe condition. This position will require a highly skilled individual with broad custodial experience at a greater knowledge and skill level with all equipment and machinery used by the custodial department in the performance of their duties, and will require the knowledge and skill set to train custodial II, Custodian I, subs, and student workers in the safe operation and care of all custodial equipment. The custodial Lead Worker will fill in for the supervisor when he/she is away on leave. Day Lead may also be required to fill in as back up or direct the work of mail room and shipping/receiving in the absence of personnel and when the Operations Supervisor is away.

Essential Functions and Qualifications

- Supervises and personally performs all phases of assigned custodial work such work as cleaning classrooms, restrooms, offices, halls, walks, meeting areas and dining areas;
- Operate and maintain custodial equipment safely and efficiently;
- Directs, plans, schedules, and participates in deep cleaning activities such as scrub, seal, apply finish, polish, shampoo carpets/upholster, refinish hard wood floors and similar tasks;
- As assigned lock and unlock classrooms, restrooms, and other designated buildings or areas. When leaving areas secure doors, windows, and buildings; turns off unnecessary lights and ensures buildings are secured;
- Reports safety concerns, vandalism sanitary, fire hazards, or security violation;
- In emergency or unusual situations, may reassign staff to jobs other than regularly scheduled; inspects buildings, reporting unsatisfactory or dangerous situations which cannot be immediately corrected to appropriate authority;
- Inspect and ensure fire extinguisher and emergency lights are carry out for buildings. Loads a truck; drives a light truck and other district vehicles, in delivering or picking up equipment, furniture, and supplies; operates a forklift;
- Assists in training new personnel and maintain/update safety date sheets (SDS) binders;
- Keeps records and submits oral reports on required activities; Maintain inventory control of custodial equipment;
- Assist in coordinating Sets up/teardowns on/off campus events, furniture, equipment's, classrooms and meeting areas in accordance with requests;
- Assists in requisitioning custodial materials, supplies and equipment;
- Is responsible to keep up to date with SIPE online safety training and attend all other training activities relevant to the custodial position;
- Computer skills to access emails, work orders, and safety training modules;
- Assist with work order, time sheets, overtime forms and ensures forms are processed properly;
- Make recommendations for improvements and modifications;
- Assures safety practices are being followed and personal protective equipment is being used;
- Lead custodian will act as a floater and will fill in absences of personal; custodians, mail courier, shipping and receiving clerk as needed;
- Assures routine and preventive maintenance on equipment is performed to safety and district standards;
- Assist with AED monthly inspections and Sharp pickups;
- Performs other related work as assigned.
Knowledge of:
- Modern, detailed, and advanced cleaning methods and procedures;
- Safe work practices related to custodial care and equipment;
- Organize training programs and demonstrate and instruct on safe working conditions;
- Cleaning chemicals and their proper use;
- Safety Data Sheets, their purpose, and locations;
- Planning and organization work scheduling procedures and techniques;
- Knowledge of refinishing wood floors;
- Computer and software programs normally used in custodial operations; necessary for record keeping and database management; word processing and spreadsheets;
- Types and quantities of custodial materials needed to maintain campus buildings;
- Principles of supervision.
Demonstrated ability to:
- Learn and follow established cleaning schedules and methods;
- Use cleaning materials and equipment efficiently and safely;
- Make minor non-technical repairs as well as routine and preventative maintenance to custodial equipment;
- Work independently; as well as with students, staff, and faculty;
- Train staff on proper cleaning methods and equipment safety;
- Drive a work truck and other vehicles to perform duties;
- Read, write and computer skills;
- Provide input to Supervisor regarding custodial staff job performance;
- Understand and carry out oral and written directions.
Working Conditions:
- Duties are primarily performed on the Santa Maria campus and other off-campus sites;
- Duties are performed indoors and outdoors;
- Duties may be performed during inclement weather;
- Work requires standing and walking for prolonged periods;
- The incumbent will experience interruptions while performing normal duties during the
regular workday; - The incumbent will have contact, in person, by email or on the telephone, with executive, management, supervisory, academic and classified staff and the general public.
Physical Demands:
- Ability to lift, carry, and/or moves objects weighing up to 50 pounds;
- Handle equipment, and operate machinery necessary to perform job duties;
- Sit or stand for extended periods of time;
- Bend and twist, push and pull, stoop, kneel;
- Reach in all directions;
- Frequent, pushing and/or pulling of objects weighing up to 120 pounds with occasional heavy work;
- Handle equipment; hand truck (dollies), pallet jack;
- Work at heights; ascend and descend ladders, and work in multi-level buildings.
Special Qualification: Evidence of a sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, and ethnic backgrounds of staff and students and to staff and students with disabilities.

Minimum Qualifications

Education and Experience: High school diploma or GED and two years of custodial or general building maintenance experience. Individuals possessing the experience, knowledge and abilities listed above are considered to possess the necessary education. Licenses and certificates required:
- Possession of a valid and appropriate California Driver's License;
- Forklift certification within first year of employment;
- Hard wood floors certification or two years of experience with care and maintenance processes.

The desired start date is November 2025. This is a full-time, 37-hour, classified, 12-month position. Work Schedule: Monday - Thursday, 5:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m. and Friday, 5:00 a.m. - 12:30 p.m. Eligible for one percent (1%) shift differential
