Job Description

We are currently hiring a Process Development Co-op at our Sam Adams Pennsylvania Brewery.

This position is responsible for supporting development and implementation of Boston Beer Company (BBCO) global brewing and blending standards across all owned and 3rd party production facilities. They will partners with larger PD, R&D and support all new product transitions from R&D to production scale, protecting flavor profile and product integrity. They will support continuous improvement efforts - ideation, investigating new technologies, trials, and execution of solutions to enhance Brewing and Blending operations. They will collaborates with Process Engineering team to support capital projects, execute trials, lead technical explorations, and solve process anomalies.

What You'll Brew



  • In partnership with senior department leadership, identify and establish priorities for the Brewing and Quality team that drives improved safety & quality performance, brewery utilization, gross margin improvement, and better fit of BBC recipes and processes to the production locations.
  • Learn and execute wet chemistry and lab analytics processes that BBC adheres to.
  • Partners with leadership to research, author and audit corporate brewing and process standards, include operational standardization across breweries, investigating new technology, and assistance in training/developing brewing staff.
  • Assist in identifying Brewing Control Points (BCP's) for each process segment to ensure alignment between the breweries and to provide senior management with an accurate, easy to reference, comparison of current operational state.
  • Support 3rd party production sites as subject matter experts and BBCO process owners.
  • Focus on development trial management and tracking systems in BBCO production breweries that drive effective learning and controls the level of operational disruption.
  • Actively participates in supporting ideation and development of new products for all brewery/cidery taproom sites and production locations.
  • Continually identifies opportunities for resource optimization and gross margin improvement in BBC Brewing operations that increase efficiencies while preserving or improving Quality of the beer drinker's experience.
  • Partners with and supports other PD, R&D teams to benchmark external breweries and other manufacturers/suppliers for comparative data on equipment and/or processes that apply to BBC opportunities in material handling, brew house optimization, cold processing, expansion solutions, innovative staffing models, quality integration, maintenance, sustainability, and other areas of interest.

What You'll Bring

Minimum Qualifications



  • Pursuing a degree in Chemistry, Biochemistry, Biology, Manufacturing systems, Engineering, Beverage production, Brewing, Or Fermentation Science.
  • Genuine Interest and curiosity in Brewing.


Physical requirements



  • All production roles are required to pass a pre-employment physical exam to comply with their specific role requirement(s)
  • Certain roles may require the use of a respirator and passing the associated fit test
  • Ability to lift up to 50lbs, sometimes repeatedly
  • Regular walking and standing for long periods of time (up to 11 hours a day) on concrete, metal and grated surfaces
  • Responsibilities may require crouching, stepping over, crawling under, bending, twisting, climbing and reaching above head and shoulders repeatedly throughout the day
  • Responsibilities may require climbing flights of stairs, working from heights or on elevated platforms
  • Ability to wear assigned PPE (safety shoes, gloves, facemask, hearing protection and hard hat)
  • Established dexterity so you can handle materials, operate equipment and interface with computer systems with precision


Preferred Qualifications (anything listed as preferred goes under here)



  • Previous internship or co-op in brewing or blending
  • Previous internship or co-op in the beverage industry
  • Experience working with people
  • Experience with project management
  • Experience with experimental design
  • Previous experience with fermentation management ingredients


In accordance with pay transparency laws the rate for this role if hired is $18 - $20 an hour.
