I. Position Summary
Responsible for the daily activities of the nursing staff to facilitate optimal patient care. :Collaborates with the Nurse Manager, Clinical Nurse Specialist and others in the implementation and evaluation of nursing and causality assurance and all educational activities on assigned unit and related duties.
GENERAL DESCRIPTION

Vascular access nurses have a wide range of responsibilities, which can include but are not limited to:

  • Insertion and management of inpatient's ultrasound guided IV's, midlines, and PICC lines with ECG guidance.

  • Involvement in collegial collaboration to determine the best vascular access device based on the medications, current health status, diagnosis, and length of IV therapy.

  • Review physicians orders

  • Obtain informed consent

  • Document completely and accurately in medical record.

  • Providing education and support to patients about proper care for the insertion site or catheter in order to avoid infection or other complications

  • Provide education and teaching to staff on Vascular Access and best practice standards regarding care management and complications.

  • Removing access devices when they are no longer needed

  • Maintaining inventory of supplies, equipment, and medications required for treatments or procedures

  • Observing patients for signs of infection or other complications related to their vascular access device

  • Providing emotional support to patients and their families during treatments or procedures

WORK EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS

RNs must be able to completed theoretical and practical formal education in vascular device placement to be authorized to place Advanced Peripherals, Midlines, PICC at the patients beside using ultrasound guidance. RN must also be able to navigate and chart in electronic medical record, have excellent critical thinking skills, Compassion, Organization, Dexterity, and good interpersonal skills.

  • At least one year of nursing experience in acute care.

Must have a minimum of 1-year vascular access experience using ultrasound, including PICC line insertion

PICC certification required

ICU or Critical care experience preferred

EDUCATION & LICENSE REQUIREMENTS

  • Graduation from an accredited school of nursing. Current State of Massachusetts RN licensure ASN (BSN preferred) Familiarity with organization and function of departments in the acute care setting. Also with policy regulations and procedures of the hospital is required. American Heart Association or equivalent B.L.S. certification for health care provider required upon hire or during orientation; American Heart Association or equivalent A.C.L.S. certification for health care provider is preferred. Evade training required during orientation and ongoing thereafter.

Unless certification, licensure or registration is required, an equivalent combination of education and experience which provides proficiency in the areas of responsibility listed in this description may be substituted for the above requirements.
