The Academic Advising Manager provides comprehensive academic advising to undergraduate students in the School of Education and leads the coordination of the School's participation in the campus-wide Summer Orientation, Advising, and Registration (SOAR) program. This role supports student success through individualized guidance, program planning, and strategic leadership of summer onboarding initiatives.

Responsibilities

Academic Advising (~70%)

  • Provide academic advising and referrals to campus resources for undergraduate and prospective students.

  • Interpret and communicate School of Education and university academic policies, procedures, and program requirements.

  • Support student decision-making related to course selection, study abroad, and pre-professional experiences.

  • Advise students through multiple modalities: one-on-one appointments, group sessions, drop-ins, virtual advising, and program-specific events.

  • Maintain accurate and timely records of student interactions using the Advisor Notes System and Starfish.

  • Advocate for student needs and represent the School of Education on internal and campus-wide committees.

SOAR Program Management (~30%)

  • Serve as the School of Education representative on the campus SOAR coordinating committee.

  • Develop the summer student enrollment schedule and advising calendar.

  • Coordinate advisor training and establish School-specific advising policies for SOAR.

  • Participate in hiring and onboarding of peer advisors and a graduate assistant.

  • Collaborate on the creation and revision of advising materials used during SOAR.

  • Collect and report data on student enrollment and advising outcomes.

  • Work with departments and programs to ensure course access and enrollment support throughout the summer

Key Job Responsibilities:
  • Develops and implements academic advising events such as workshops, panel discussions, and guest speakers
  • Serves as a main point of contact for students and provides information about educational options and academic requirements; assists with identifying and assessing interests, skills, and values to match appropriate field of study/career options, and refers students to appropriate institutional resources
  • Participates in the campus-wide advising community providing input to leadership regarding the development of advising, recruitment, and co/curricular programs offered by the school/college
  • Receives, processes, and responds to academic inquiries according to established policies and procedures
  • Proactively engages students as needed
  • Maintains expertise with advised curriculum and may assist in developing and recommending exceptions for policy and curriculum
  • Supervises unit staff and/or plans, organizes, allocates resources, assesses performance, and leads the operational activities of a function within the advising or academic services portfolio, such as program management and/or curriculum management

Facilitates Student Orientation, Advising, and Registration (SOAR) program in SOE by providing leadership for structure, programming, and delivery of content.

  • Maintains confidentiality and accurate student records and processes and responds to academic inquiries according to established institutional and Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) policies
Department:

The Student Services office serves as the academic dean's office for all undergraduate students in the School of Education. Work in the office includes academic and career advising, prospective student recruitment, retention, scholarships, curriculum, policy, and other academic and student affairs support.

Compensation:

Minimum: $65,000.00 annually

Commensurate with qualifications and experience. Required Qualifications:
  • Demonstrated knowledge of academic or career advising practices in a higher education setting, with at least two years of professional experience.

  • Proven ability to coordinate or manage projects or programs within a college or university environment.

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to convey complex information clearly to diverse audiences.

  • Excellent organizational and time management skills, including the ability to prioritize tasks and manage multiple responsibilities effectively.

  • Proficiency in working with data sets, including the ability to interpret, analyze, and present student-related data accurately.

  • Understanding of undergraduate student development and the ability to support students from a variety of backgrounds and experiences.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience supporting or coordinating new student orientation programs, particularly in an advising or administrative capacity.

  • Familiarity with student advising tools and systems such as Starfish and the Advisor Notes System.

  • Ability to collaborate effectively across departments and participate in campus-wide committees or initiatives.

  • Experience developing or delivering training materials and resources for advising staff or student support programs.

Education:

Bachelor's required, Master's preferred
