The Investigating Officer & Hearing Coordinator plays a critical role in upholding the University of Wisconsin - Madison's commitment to a safe, respectful and inclusive campus community. This position is responsible for conducting fair, thorough, and timely investigations into high-profile, sensitive, or complex alleged violations of the university's student conduct code, coordinating formal hearing processes, and supporting educational outcomes that promote student accountability and holistic student development. Working within the Office of Student Conduct and Community Standards (OSCCS), the Investigating Officer & Hearing Coordinator ensures that all processes are compliant with institutional policies, state and federal regulations, and incorporate best practices in student conduct administration.

Key Job Responsibilities:
  • Serves as a procedural resource to students, advisors, and university personnel involved in the student conduct process

  • Assists in the development and delivery of training for hearing panel members and campus stakeholders

  • Coordinates and facilitates formal conduct hearings for investigations conducted by other OSCCS staff, including scheduling, communicating with parties and advisors, preparing materials, advising hearing panels, and ensuring procedural compliance

  • Independently investigates and assists in the resolution of complex, sensitive or high-profile alleged violations of the university's student conduct code. This includes interviewing involved parties, gathering documentation, analyzing evidence, and preparing investigative reports

  • Serves as the program or unit liaison to internal and external stakeholder groups
  • Advises and enforces Institution policies related to services in Student Affairs
  • Monitors, evaluates, and modifies processes, procedures, and/or standards, ensuring alignment with the Institution's mission, values, goals, and objectives, as well as all local, state, and federal laws and regulations.
  • May monitor the program budget and approve expenditures
  • Plans, organizes, administers, and manages processes and operations related to assigned area(s) of responsibility
  • Schedules logistics and secures resources to support the operational plans of the program or unit

The Office of Student Conduct and Community Standards (OSCCS) at the University of Wisconsin-Madison (UW-Madison) operates under the Dean of Students within Student Affairs. We strive to ensure the university's teaching, learning, research, and service activities occur in living and learning environments that are safe and free from violence, harassment, fraud, theft, disruption, and intimidation. OSCCS is responsible for addressing student academic and nonacademic misconduct; this responsibility is separate from and independent of any civil or criminal action resulting from a student's conduct. The office is committed to respecting students' constitutional rights, including rights of freedom of speech or to peaceably assemble with others.

OSCCS is part of Student Affairs at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, led by the vice chancellor for student affairs. Our staff is dedicated to serving students and to helping them succeed in and out of the classroom in areas including health and well-being, student success and belogning, leadership and engagement, and student advocacy. Student Affairs includes departments led by the dean of students; departments that provide identity-based spaces and leadership resources; the Wisconsin Union; University Health Services; and University Recreation and Wellbeing.

Compensation:

The expected minimum starting salary for this position is $80,000.00 annually. Actual pay will depend on experience and qualifications. This position offers a comprehensive benefits package, including generous paid time off, competitively priced health/dental/vision/life insurance, tax-advantaged savings accounts, and participation in the nationally recognized Wisconsin Retirement System (WRS) pension fund. Required Qualifications:

Candidates should have a minimum of 3 years of professional experience in investigating and resolving civil, criminal, or discrimination complaints, as well as non-academic misconduct allegations within a university environment or a similar professional setting.

Required skills include:

- Strong writing and analytical abilities
- Excellent collaborative and interpersonal skills
- Familiarity with Title VI, Title IX, other non-discrimination laws, First Amendment protections, anti-hazing laws, and relevant criminal statutes, along with an understanding of their application in a university context.

Preferred Qualifications:

Juris Doctor or related master's degree preferred.

Education:

Bachelor's degree minimum.
