The Associate Dean for Research (ADR) is a part of the College of Letters & Science (L&S) leadership team with responsibilities that include growing and advancing the college's complex, diverse and multi-disciplinary research portfolio. General responsibilities include administration and management of the Office of Research Services (https://ls.wisc.edu/faculty-staff/ls-research-services), advancing and advocating for the broad research mission of the College, advising the Dean and partnering with Divisional Associate Deans on college-wide initiatives, representing the College on matters related to the research mission, overseeing the allocation of College resources that support research, and working with campus and external stakeholders as necessary.

The ADR is committed to fostering world-class research, advancing research excellence, and building collaborative partnerships within the College, across campus, including Wisconsin Alumni Research Foundation (WARF) and Wisconsin Foundation & Alumni Association (WFAA), and with outside scholars, external funding agencies and foundations, and industry leaders. The individual will require an understanding of multiple funding agencies and be familiar with the national-level research trends. They will have a broad understanding of research across the College. The ADR will serve as a catalyst for engaging faculty and staff to pursue research opportunities, including encouraging some calculated risk taking.

This position is expected to be a 100% limited appointment for a five-year term, with an option at the discretion the Dean of being renewed for an additional five years. The individual will be able to maintain a research portfolio and/or teaching load by being able to dedicate 20% of this time to those efforts.

Key Job Responsibilities:
  • Exercises supervisory authority for the Director of Research Services and overall leadership of the Office of Research Services within the College.

  • Continuously identifies, assesses and develops opportunities to strengthen the core capabilities, quality, relevance and impact of the College's research portfolio.

  • Maintains a comprehensive working knowledge of the college's research activities, programs, strategy, organizational structure and resources.

  • Develops, implements, directs and evaluates College research operating policies and procedures to comply with regulations, institutional policies, college objectives and financial constraints.

  • Fosters and maintains collaborative strategic relationships within L&S, across campus and beyond, including with other leading research institutions, federal agencies, and key stakeholders and partners.

  • Serves as the College's liaison and key spokesperson to internal and external stakeholder groups providing organizational information about L&S research and representing the interests of the research program.

  • Advises the Dean and serves as a member of their dean's leadership team to include partnering on college-wide initiatives.

  • Leads the Collective for Research Impact and Social Partnerships (CRISP - https://crisp.wisc.edu/).

Required Qualifications:

  • Tenured or tenurable faculty member in the College of Letters & Science.

  • Demonstrated knowledge of research policy within higher education.

  • Experience in a leadership role related to department, college, and/or campus administration or leadership at the national or international level.

  • Prior experience supervising personnel or has demonstrated the ability to supervise personnel, including remote team members.

  • Experience leading/coordinating collaborative, multi-disciplinary projects.

  • Experience managing various complex budgets from varied sources (grants, gifts, etc.).

  • Evidence of the ability to build and maintain strong interpersonal and professional relationships.

  • A successful research record with national and international recognition in their field of expertise.

  • Clear commitment to fostering a collaborative workplace environment.


Preferred Qualifications:

  • A broad understanding of activities contained within a world-class, liberal arts research portfolio.

  • The ability to adopt a college-wide point of view and facilitate connections between researchers.

  • Ability to develop and articulate research priorities in partnership with College leadership.

  • An understanding of multiple funding agencies, familiarity with the national-level conversation, and the ability to apply that understanding to enhancing the scope and impact of research in L&S.

  • Excellent communication skills with experience in being a communication conduit and translator between various stakeholders.


Education:

PhD required, preference for a field related to the mission of the College of Letters & Science
