This position operates within the Financial Intelligence Unit of the Enterprise Risk and Compliance organization. The FIU mitigates money laundering and terrorist financing risks to Western Union. This highly visible area is responsible for identifying, escalating, and mitigating money laundering and financial crime risk.

The FIU is seeking a Data Scientist to support investigations into money laundering, fraud, terrorist financing, and other forms of financial crime. You'll be responsible for analyzing large, complex financial datasets, developing models to detect suspicious activity, and creating tools that help investigators act quickly and accurately. This role sits at the intersection of data science and compliance.

Role Responsibilities



  • Analyze transaction data, customer profiles, and external datasets to identify unusual patterns or anomalies linked to financial crime.
  • Design and implement machine learning models to improve detection of fraudulent or suspicious activity.
  • Develop dashboards, risk scoring systems, and case-support tools for investigators and analysts.
  • Work with compliance officers, investigators, and regulators to translate data insights into actionable intelligence.
  • Conduct network and link analysis to uncover hidden relationships between entities.
  • Automate repetitive tasks to improve investigation efficiency.
  • Document methodologies and maintain clear audit trails for models and analyses.
  • Accelerating the development and integration of AI tools and techniques into the FIU's operational and investigative process.


Role Requirements



  • Master's degree in Data Science, Computer Science, Statistics, Economics, or a related field (or equivalent experience).
  • Strong coding skills in Python or R, with experience in SQL and handling large datasets.
  • Practical knowledge of anomaly detection supervised and unsupervised learning, and graph/network analysis.
  • Experience with visualization tools (Tableau, Power BI, or similar).
  • Ability to communicate findings clearly to non-technical stakeholders, including investigators and senior officials.
  • Sharp analytical thinking and problem-solving under pressure.
  • High ethical standards and discretion when handling sensitive information.
  • Ability to balance technical depth with investigative priorities.
  • Strong collaboration with multidisciplinary teams (i.e.: compliance, legal, IT) at multiple levels.
  • Background in financial services, banking, compliance, or law enforcement preferred.
  • Familiarity with AML (Anti-Money Laundering) and CTF (Counter-Terrorism Financing) or overall financial crime frameworks preferred.
  • Experience with big data tools (Spark, Hadoop) or cloud-based platforms (AWS, GCP, Azure) preferred.
  • Knowledge of natural language processing for unstructured data such as reports, emails, or SARs (Suspicious Activity Reports) preferred.

Salary

The base salary range is $70,200.00 - 105,000.00 USD Annual USD per year, total on target compensation includes a base salary plus annual incentives that align with individual and company performance. Actual salaries will vary based on candidates' qualifications, skills, and competencies.
