Job Summary
Provide advice and guidance to students applying for financial aid; determine eligibility for financial aid programs and ensure that aid is available in a timely manner; remain current on Federal, State, and University financial aid policies and procedures; and manage special programs and activities. Work independently under general supervision; responsible for several programs, prepares and implements written procedures/instructions when required; relies on experience and judgment to plan and accomplish assigned goals; reviews progress and evaluates results. - Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training.
- Experience and/or formal training in financial aid principles, practices, and processes; Federal, State and University policies and procedures; most financial aid specialties.
- Experience in applying guiding principles of professional judgment authority provided by the Higher Education Act. Basic knowledge of policies, regulations, and practices for awarding financial aid.
- Understanding of financial aid packaging policy; technical skills sufficient to assess computer support needs that apply to new system upgrades within financial aid systems. Knowledge of the University mission in providing financial aid to students.
- Interpersonal communication skills to clearly and effectively interact with individuals of varying ages and cultural backgrounds and perspectives; to research, secure, and/or provide information to clarify situations, resolve problems, make public presentations, and/or training/guidance to other staff members.
- Mathematical skills to add, subtract, multiply, and divide. Computer knowledge and skills to utilize various programs and software for word processing, spreadsheets, and student database management programs.
- Skills to organize work effectively to achieve timely progress on multiple simultaneous projects, distribute effort appropriately among the projects, meet deadlines and maintain a high level of productivity. Skills to read, understand, analyze, interpret, evaluate, and apply federal/state/ university rules, regulations, and policies.
- Skills to assess budgetary needs, oversee budgetary allocations, and approve or deny requests for funds. Analytical skills to analyze and evaluate technical and non-technical program requirements, information, or problems in an objective manner and make logical conclusions; to provide a sound basis for establishment of priorities, selection of appropriate courses of action for pursuit or recommendations to others, and to resolve conflicts.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with UC & UC Davis policies & procedures.
- Knowledge of IRS tax forms and preparation.
- Writing skills to prepare a variety of proposals, correspondence, reports, procedures, agreements, and training documents.
- Knowledge of financial aid policies and procedures affecting programs, student issues, and confidentiality of records and information. Knowledge of the University mission in providing financial aid to students. Skills to research, identify, and validate student activities and programs.
- Skills to develop innovate solutions and programs, attempt difficult and unfamiliar projects/assignments and respond with flexibility to requests for assistance in problem-solving and program development and/or refinement.
- Leadership and decision-making skills to evaluate program/student needs, problem-solve, chair meetings/committees, and train other staff.
- Knowledge of fundamental school and academic program principles and standards (admissions, registration, financial aid, gift acceptance) to make effective judgments.
