Position Summary
The American Museum of Natural History is one of the world's preeminent scientific and cultural institutions, and has as its mission to discover, interpret and disseminate information about human cultures, the natural world and the universe through a wide-ranging program of scientific research, education and exhibition.

The Education department is seeking an Assistant to the Director of Children and Family Learning to support key programmatic initiatives in the Children and Family Learning ( CFL) department, leading procurement of materials needed for nearly 7000 children served annually and maintaining inventory as well as supporting onsite coordination.

Responsible for a variety of programs that serve children of ages two to 10 and their caregivers, the CFL division is responsible for the administration of summer camp programming, after-school events, multi-year science enrichment programs, large-scale family outreach festivals and the Museum's Discovery Room exhibit when needed.

Job duties include, but are not limited to:

  • Order materials biweekly needed to serve children participating in weekly programming and summer offerings. Maintain materials inventory and place orders. Communicate with educators about their needs and follow up when orders arrive. Re-stock. Support clean-up of non-expendable objects used.
  • Open purchase orders. Track and reconcile invoices for CFL.
  • Support onsite coordination, including upkeep and cleanliness of common hallways of classrooms and kitchen areas.
  • Support managers with welcoming children/families during busy times of the day by doing door duty and addressing small issues.


This full-time position is expected to work on weekdays for a total of 28 hours per week.
The expected salary for the Assistant to the Director of Children and Family Learning is $38,000/annual - $40,000/annual. This position is overtime-eligible and the AMNH offers an extensive benefits package designed to meet the needs of our dedicated and diverse community.

Pay will be determined based on several factors. The hiring range for the position at commencement is based on the type of work and the scope of responsibilities. The salary and placement offered is based on a number of individualized factors, including, but not limited to, skills, knowledge, training, education, credentials, areas of specialization and depth and scope of experience.
Minimum Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • Experience with Microsoft Excel.

Preferred Qualifications
  • One year of administrative experience.
Physical Demands

  • Must be able to remain in a stationary position (sitting or standing) for prolonged periods.
  • Must be able to occasionally lift up to 20 pounds.
  • Must be able to move about the Museum campus.
  • Positioning/change of positioning: Must be able to frequently position oneself/body to accomplish job duties.

    • Balancing: Maintaining body equilibrium to prevent falling.
    • Climbing: Ascending or descending physical structures.
    • Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally and up to 20 pounds of force frequently. May include any of the following:

      • Pushing: Using upper extremities to press against something with steady force to thrust forward, downward, or outward.
      • Pulling: Using upper extremities to exert force in order to drag, haul or tug objects in a sustained motion.
      • Lifting: Raising objects from a lower to a higher position or moving objects horizontally from position-to-position.
