Salary offers are based on the candidate's equivalent experience and internal equity with other employees within the same job classification. This position is eligible for overtime compensation for all hours worked over 40 in the designated workweek.

Do you enjoy working in a laboratory setting? Are you skilled in maintaining chain of custody? As a laboratory support professional, you will have the opportunity to use your accessioning skills to support the 4th largest Medical Examiner jurisdiction in the nation!

The Maricopa County Office of the Medical Examiner is seeking a detail-oriented and efficient Accessioning Technician to join our team! In this role, you will contribute by accessioning specimens collected during autopsy, recording relevant information into the case management system, and preserving the chain of custody when securing and releasing specimens to an external toxicology laboratory. Your work is integral to achieving established standards of timely toxicology reports for the Medical Examiners.

Education
  • One year of experience working in a hospital, medical, or forensic laboratory as a laboratory specimen processor/laboratory aide or similar role

  • High School diploma or GED

  • A combination of post-secondary education in Forensic Sciences, Biological Sciences, Chemistry, or other related fields, and/or job-related experience may substitute for the required experience on a year-for-year basis

Job Contributions
  • Receives, reviews, and documents the receipt of body fluid specimens and tissue samples by case number in the case information system and orders proper test(s) as indicated by the Medical Examiner

  • Tracks and stores specimens and samples in appropriate areas

  • Ensures hazardous materials and drugs are appropriately handled, stored, and legally released or disposed of properly

  • Releases evidentiary items to authorized law enforcement personnel while maintaining chain of custody

  • Prepares forms, labels, and documents for shipments of specimens to outside laboratories for further testing

  • Obtains information and prepares requests for DNA or other testing of specimens

  • Prepares, records, and disposes of specimens and samples in accordance with retention schedules

  • Performs daily checks on the refrigeration units, documents appropriately, and requests maintenance as necessary

  • Communicates regularly with outside laboratories, hospitals, and agencies to ensure proper specimen documentation and testing is completed

  • Provides input on laboratory procedures and other documents as requested

  • Prepares specimens for rapid DNA analysis

Working Conditions
  • Ability to work in malodorous conditions, and sufficient strength and emotional stability to work with confidential information and/or graphic material

  • Weekend hours may be required based on case volume
