POSITION SUMMARY:

Reporting to the site Hospital President, The Chief Nursing Officer (CNO) is the senior leader responsible for the overall strategic and operational leadership of nursing services at the hospital. The CNO ensures the delivery of safe, high-quality, patient-centered care while advancing clinical excellence, regulatory compliance, and operational efficiency. This role provides vision and direction for nursing practice, workforce planning, professional development, and patient experience.

The CNO partners closely with the site senior leadership team, medical staff, and department leaders to achieve hospital goals, foster a culture of collaboration and accountability, and drive performance outcomes. The CNO also serves as a key advocate for nursing staff, representing their voice in organizational decision-making while supporting the hospital's mission, values, and commitment to the community.

ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES / DUTIES:

Strategic Leadership & Governance


  • Develop and execute the strategic vision for nursing services in Brighton, ensuring alignment with the hospital's mission, values, and long-term goals.
  • Serve as a key member of the executive leadership team, contributing to overall hospital operations, growth strategies, and community engagement.
  • Represent nursing in governance, board, and medical staff forums to ensure nursing perspectives inform organizational decision-making.

Clinical Quality, Safety & Patient Experience


  • Drive initiatives that ensure the delivery of safe, evidence-based, high-quality, and patient-centered care.
  • Monitor and improve clinical outcomes, infection control, patient satisfaction, and nursing-sensitive indicators.
  • Oversee compliance with all federal, state, and regulatory requirements (e.g., CMS, Joint Commission, state boards of nursing).

Operational & Financial Management


  • Lead workforce planning, staffing models, and scheduling to ensure adequate coverage while maintaining efficiency and fiscal responsibility.
  • Develop and manage the nursing budget, resource allocation, and capital requests.
  • Partner with finance, operations, and service-line leaders to drive cost-effective care and improve hospital margins.

Labor & Employee Relations


  • Lead nursing workforce management in a unionized environment, ensuring compliance with collective bargaining agreements.
  • Build collaborative relationships with union representatives, addressing issues proactively and constructively.
  • Partner with Human Resources to support labor negotiations, grievance resolution, and contract implementation.
  • Promote open communication and a fair, respectful workplace culture that balances organizational needs with employee rights.

Workforce Development & Engagement


  • Recruit, retain, and develop nursing talent; implement strategies to reduce turnover and enhance engagement.
  • Promote a culture of professional growth, continuing education, and succession planning for nursing leaders.
  • Support shared governance and empower nurses to participate in decision-making around practice and care delivery.

Interdisciplinary Collaboration & Community Partnership


  • Build strong partnerships with physicians, advanced practice providers, and allied health professionals to advance coordinated care.
  • Champion collaboration across service lines to enhance patient flow, access, and outcomes.
  • Represent the hospital in community forums, professional associations, and external partnerships to advance nursing and community health priorities.

Innovation & Continuous Improvement


  • Foster a culture of evidence-based practice, research, and innovation in nursing care delivery.
  • Lead initiatives to adopt new technologies, care models, and practices that improve safety, efficiency, and the patient experience.
  • Utilize data and analytics to drive decision-making and performance improvement.

JOB REQUIREMENTS

REQUIRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:


  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) and a Master's degree in Nursing, Healthcare Administration, Business Administration, or related field required (MSN, MHA, MBA, or equivalent); and a minimum of 10 years of progressive nursing leadership experience, with at least 5 years in an executive or senior leadership role (e.g., CNO, ACNO, VP of Nursing, or Nursing Director in a complex environment).
  • Experience with budget development, financial management, and operational oversight.

PREFERRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:


  • Doctorate (DNP or PhD)
  • Experience in a unionized environment and labor relations

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS REQUIRED:

  • Currently Licensed Registered Nurse within in the State of Massachusetts

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS PREFERRED:

  • BLS or ACLS

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES (KSAs):


  • Knowledge of current theoretical approaches to the delivery of nursing care and the strategies for examining and applying relevant concepts.
  • Knowledge performance improvement concepts and the ability to participate in developing and implementing organizational strategies to address opportunities for improving the delivery of nursing care to patients.
  • Strong strategic thinking, problem-solving, and decision-making skills.
  • Exceptional communication and relationship-building abilities
  • Ability to lead organizational change
