The Opportunity

The Medical Data & Analytics Engineer plays a crucial role in accelerating evidence generation, decision-making, and innovation within USM and beyond, by bridging medical data strategy, engineering, and analytics. This position demands profound technical expertise in clinical data, real-world data (RWD), and scientific literature, coupled with strategic acumen in medical data use cases and their innovative applications.

As a systems thinker and a strong collaborator across the R&D enterprise, this individual will contribute to evolving the USM data ecosystem, aligning it with global digital, data, and AI initiatives from Product Development (PD) and early Research and Development (REDs). This role is pivotal in leveraging clinical and real-world data assets to deliver scientific and business value across USM, ultimately making a meaningful impact on patients.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assess medical data sources (e.g., clinical trial, RWD, scientific literature) required for medical insights related to clinical trials and evidence planning, and lead the acquisition, transformation, and integration of new data sources into enterprise platforms (when needed).

  • Collaborate with data scientists, statisticians, and clinicians to provide analytic-ready datasets for clinical, RWE, and scientific literature, fostering strong partnerships with Medical, Clinical & RWD functions globally.

  • Define and evolve the Medical Operations data strategy to support medical affairs in partnership with other EG and E4A teams. Represent USM on global strategic initiatives related to data foundation, data capabilities, and analytics.

  • Translate scientific and business questions into medical data requirements, tools, and data platforms needed to deliver medical insights for trial design, operational strategy, and evidence planning.

  • Influence R&D enterprise data governance, stewardship, and policies, providing thought leadership on emerging trends including AI/ML applications, data linkage, digital health integration, and decentralized trials.

  • Act as an innovator and connector by leveraging emerging technologies and novel data sources to advance evidence generation, introducing modern engineering and analytics practices, and bridging scientific, technical, and business perspectives to unlock multimodal data value, while also serving as a change agent for multimodal data adoption and cultural/operational transformation.

Who you are

Required Qualifications & Experience

  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, Biomedical Informatics, Data Engineering, or a related field (PhD is a plus for advanced biomedical applications).

  • 6+ years of experience in data engineering or analytics engineering, with exposure to healthcare or life sciences.

  • Proficiency in SQL, Python, Spark, and workflow orchestration tools

  • Hands-on experience with cloud platforms (AWS, Azure, or GCP).

  • Familiarity with healthcare and biomedical data (EHR, claims, registries, genomics, imaging, digital, PROs) and relevant standards (OMOP, FHIR, CDISC, HL7, DICOM).

  • Experience building analytics-ready data assets and supporting visualization or statistical modeling workflows.

Travel Requirements

The position is located in South San Francisco but the candidate. The position may require up to an additional 25% time traveling.

The expected salary range for this position based on the primary location of South San Francisco, CA is $143,100 - 265,700. Actual pay will be determined based on experience, qualifications, geographic location, and other job-related factors permitted by law. A discretionary annual bonus may be available based on individual and Company performance. This position also qualifies for the benefits detailed at the link provided below.
