EHS Manager - Akron
Huntsman is seeking an EHS Manager supporting the Advanced Materials Division located in Akron, Ohio. This position will report to the EHS Regional Senior Manager.
Job Scope
The EHS Manager will be responsible for managing the Akron site's Environmental, Health, and Safety (EHS) management systems in close cooperation with the Site Manager, Regional EHS Manager, and other members of the site leadership team. This role ensures the site operates in full compliance with corporate and regulatory policies, providing a safe and environmentally sound workplace for employees and the surrounding community. The position includes direct leadership of two employees and supervision of two contractors.
In summary, as the EHS Manager, you will:
- Ensure compliance with federal, state, local, and corporate environmental, health, and safety standards, including but not limited to OSHA, ACC Responsible Care, TSCA, DOT, and EPA.
- Provide advice and counsel to plant leadership and act as an advisor to the Site Manager in all matters related to environment, health, safety, process safety, and site security.
- Deliver monthly and annual reports on site environmental performance, personal safety, and process safety metrics in accordance with corporate and regulatory requirements.
- Continuously improve safety and environmental performance by investigating incidents, developing corrective actions, and maintaining EHS improvement plans.
- Oversee site environmental compliance, including air, water, and waste management requirements.
- Be a visible presence in the facility to assess compliance with safety, process safety management (PSM), and environmental standards, using coaching and mentoring to drive EHS improvements.
- Manage EHS training programs, including employee onboarding, contractor training, emergency drills, industrial hygiene, and environmental compliance topics (SPCC, stormwater, emissions, waste handling, and disposal).
- Collaborate with other department managers to establish site policies, practices, and procedures in alignment with operational goals.
- Serve as an active participant on the Site Leadership Team, driving the EHS culture and advancing toward the goal of Zero Harm.
- Lead and develop the site's EHS management system, fostering a culture of process safety and environmental stewardship.
- Function as the Facility Security Officer, coordinating site security operations and requirements.
- Participate in site and regional EHS initiatives.
Qualifications
You must possess the below minimum qualifications to be initially considered for this position. Preferred qualifications are in addition to the minimum requirements and are considered a plus factor in identifying top candidates. The candidate must have an unrestricted right to work for Huntsman in the United States.
Minimum Qualifications
Education required
- Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Safety, Industrial Hygiene, or a related field.
- (Alternatively, an Associate's degree with 5+ years of relevant experience will be considered.)
Experience required
- Proven experience in EHS management, ideally within a manufacturing environment.
- Demonstrated ability to ensure compliance with OSHA and environmental regulations.
- Experience leading and developing teams in a safety and compliance-focused environment.
Skills and knowledge
- Strong knowledge of environmental, health, safety, and process safety regulations.
- Excellent communication, planning, and organizational skills.
- High technical and analytical ability to identify and assess EHS risks and implement effective mitigation measures.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office and familiarity with EHS software systems (e.g., KMS, Cority) is a plus.
- Ability to work collaboratively across all levels of the organization and with regulatory agencies.
- Demonstrated tact and diplomacy when dealing with government officials, employees, and the public.
- Strong leadership presence with the ability to drive a proactive safety culture.
Preferred Qualifications
- 5+ years of experience in the chemical industry.
- Experience with OSHA Process Safety Management (PSM), Process Hazard Analysis (PHA), and Management of Change (MOC).
- Prior experience with environmental and safety reporting to regulatory agencies.
Working EnvironmentThis position requires regular presence on the manufacturing site, with direct interaction across site operations and occasional travel for training or audits.
