The Building People, LLC, has a position open for a full-time Fire Protection Engineer - Department of Defense. The Fire Protection Engineer represents the company on fire alarm and life safety engineering for facility control system projects. The FPE provides a Professional Engineering stamp where required, ensures designs and installations conform to applicable codes and criteria, develops and reviews calculations and drawings, leads acceptance testing and commissioning, and supports integration of fire alarm systems within broader Industrial Control System environments. This role supports a Department of Defense mission and coordinates closely with project managers, designers, field teams, and authorities having jurisdiction to deliver compliant, reliable systems.

Required Experience & Skills



  • Ten years of experience in Fire Protection engineering, including at least five years in the functional area aligned to this project work.
  • Active U.S. Professional Engineer license in Fire Protection or a closely related engineering discipline, with ability to obtain reciprocity as needed.
  • Expertise applying applicable codes and criteria, including NFPA 70, 72, 101, 110, and common water-based standards, plus IBC and IFC, and DoD criteria such as UFC 3-600-01 and relevant UFGS sections for fire detection and mass notification.
  • Demonstrated experience producing and sealing engineered drawings, narratives, and calculations, including battery and voltage-drop calculations and hydraulic calculations when applicable.
  • Experience with mass notification and integrated fire alarm systems, including programming, sequence of operations, and device layout.
  • Experience planning, conducting, and witnessing factory tests, site tests, integrated system tests, and final acceptance.
  • Proficiency reviewing and approving submittals, shop drawings, and as-builts, and assembling closeout and O&M packages.
  • Familiarity with interfaces between fire alarm systems and related ICS elements such as UMCS or security systems, while maintaining code-required separation and reliability.
  • Working knowledge of EM 385-1-1 safety requirements and typical quality processes, including three-phase inspections and corrective action tracking.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, including coordination with stakeholders and AHJs.
  • Ability to travel to active project sites, including secure facilities.



Preferred Experience & Skills



  • NICET Level III or IV in Fire Alarm Systems.
  • Certified Fire Protection Specialist (CFPS) or equivalent credential.
  • Experience on federal task order contracts for facility modernization, fire alarm, or ICS-related work.
  • Familiarity with cybersecurity touchpoints relevant to facility-related control systems and network-connected fire alarm components in coordination with project cybersecurity teams.
  • Experience leading design reviews, code compliance audits, and supplier quality oversight.



Required Education



  • Bachelor's degree in engineering from an accredited university or college, preferably fire protection engineering or a closely related field.



Preferred Education



  • Advanced degree in fire protection engineering or related discipline, or an NCEES record to support multi-state licensure.

Clearance



  • Ability to obtain a Secret Clearance.



Travel



  • Minimum 25% to job sites CONUS and OCONUS as required by task orders.
