We are currently seeking a Controller to join our Accounting & Finance team at our headquarters in Philadelphia, PA.

Position Summary

Responsible for supervising the accounting staff and oversees all aspects of accounting for the firm including payroll, cash management, accounts receivable, accounts payable, financial statement preparation, corporate income tax compliance, financial budgeting and financial planning and analysis. Ensures compliance with accounting standards, company processes and procedures and ensures adequate reporting is developed to support the business needs of Burns.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities



  • Manages all aspects of financial and tax reporting
  • Manages payroll, treasury, accounts receivable, accounts payable and fixed asset functions.
  • Prepares monthly financial statement (balance sheet, income statement, cash flow) information
  • Responsible for providing management with accurate and timely financial accounting information by preparing and monthly financial reporting information and assuring the quality of the information
  • Responsible for preparing written analysis for management to explain variances and identify key factors impacting financial performance
  • Responsible to estimate corporate income tax liabilities, and to review and approve annual and quarterly tax filings.
  • Responsible for annual budget preparation and ongoing analysis of actual to budget performance
  • Ensures financial accounting records are maintained in accordance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP)
  • Ensures financial and accounting controls are documented and updated regularly through written policies and procedure
  • Overhead expense control - review overhead expenses on a monthly basis and identify potential problem areas requiring further action
  • Accounts receivable collection - responsible for working with clients and project managers to ensure timely collection of outstanding dollars. Highlights problem areas for management
  • Responsible for equity recordkeeping and administration of incentive deferred compensation plan
  • Supports and coordinates with external Accountants for all financial reporting and compliance engagements, including; financial statement review, overhead schedule audit, benefit plan (401K and ESOP) audits, tax return preparation.
  • Oversees and controls cash management including monitoring the line of credit and preparing cash flow projections
  • Support audits by external agencies
  • Ad hoc reporting as required by management and external Accountants


Supervisory Responsiblities

Directly supervises 3 to 5 employees in the Accounting Department. Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems.

Education and Experience




  • Bachelor's degree (B.A.) from four-year college or university plus seven (7) years OR equivalent experience in all aspects of accounting for a service company.



  • CPA license is required.
