Overview

TISTA Science and Technology is looking for a MS SQL Server and AWS DBA to join our team. The Senior MS SQL Server and AWS DBA is responsible for providing technical support and guidance on a variety of hands-on engineering design, integration and maintenance.

They will design and develop all required Microsoft SQL database objects including but not limited to tables, procedures, functions, packages, and users to support assigned Web Application projects. Will conduct complex data analysis to assess implications of cross team data interactions and data service design considerations that impact these applications.

Responsibilities

  • Administer SQL Server 2019 instances on Windows Server 2019 in AWS and on-premises environments, including Always On Availability Groups and standalone configurations. Responsibilities include database setup, backup/restore, performance monitoring and tuning, and security administration.
  • Manage and administer security for PostgreSQL Aurora and RDS instances, ensuring compliance with organizational and AWS security best practices.
  • Create and deploy DDL changes across all environments; merge and maintain version control through Bitbucket repositories.
  • Configure, manage, and troubleshoot AWS Database Migration Service (DMS) tasks for data transfers between SQL Server databases and S3 buckets.
  • Launch and configure EC2 instances via Terraform or AWS Console Service Catalog; perform SQL Server installations, apply patches, and resolve vulnerabilities in all environments.
  • Develop custom ad-hoc SQL scripts, queries, and stored procedures to monitor replication, identify long-running queries, detect truncations, and troubleshoot blocking/deadlock issues. Document findings and share with the DBA team for reference.
  • Perform regular cost optimization reviews to identify and decommission unused servers, drives, and software resources.
  • Maintain weekly full and daily differential/log backups; verify integrity and ensure all backups are securely uploaded to S3 buckets.
  • Create and alter database objects (tables, indexes, procedures, etc.) and perform data migrations as needed.
  • Monitor for abnormal security audit events, failed logins, and performance anomalies; take corrective actions and document resolutions.
  • Handle ad-hoc data copy, modification, and extraction requests; ensure data accuracy and integrity.
  • Perform comprehensive database performance tuning, storage usage monitoring, alert management, backup/recovery procedures, and replication maintenance (transactional and snapshot).
  • Process and manage security requests for user and gateway logins; validate user membership within Active Directory (AD) groups.
  • Conduct disaster recovery (DR) testing and maintain updated DR documentation.
  • Prepare and maintain detailed step-by-step documentation for all database administration, migration, and troubleshooting processes to ensure repeatability and compliance with internal standards.
  • Provide regular Knowledge Transfer (KT) sessions and walkthroughs to team members to share updates on environment changes, newly automated processes, and incident resolutions.
  • Provide 24x7 production database administration support, including on-call rotation and escalation handling.

Qualifications

  • B.S. in Computer Science or Information Management.
  • 10+ years overall experience in the IT or IT consulting field.
  • 7+ years in database management.
  • 5+ years in AWS Database engineering.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills, with 3+ years experience preparing and presenting technical topics to senior audiences.

Clearance:

  • Must be eligible to hold a Public Trust government issued security clearance.

Education:

  • Requires BS/BA degree in computer science or information systems or related field.

Pay Range:

  • The suggested pay for this position ranges from $85,546 to $110,875.
  • The actual salary offer will carefully consider a wide range of factors, including your skills, qualifications, experience, and location.
