What You'll Do

IronArch Technology is seeking an experienced Engineering Director to lead our growing community of software engineers across multiple federal programs. This is a pivotal leadership role for a technical strategist who can drive engineering excellence, shape delivery practices, and partner directly with the growth team on capture and business development initiatives. You will serve as the senior-most engineering delivery authority in the company, responsible for guiding technical strategy, developing people, creating a supportive culture, maintaining delivery quality, identifying gaps, and ensuring IronArch's engineering practice continues to scale sustainably as we grow.

This role combines deep technical credibility with strategic leadership and business development responsibilities. Ideal candidates are comfortable reviewing code one day and representing IronArch in a capture meeting or client demo the next.

Key Responsibilities

Strategic and Department Leadership

  • Define and execute the engineering department's strategic plan aligned to company goals and portfolio needs.
  • Develop a differentiator within engineering that IronArch can be known for within that separates IronArch from our competitors.
  • Partner with Delivery, Experience, Product, and Business Development leaders to shape integrated technical solutions and cross-functional delivery models.
  • Establish and maintain technical governance, coding standards, AI use patterns, and reusable architectural patterns.
  • Oversee department health; managing staffing forecasts, utilization, employee satisfaction, and performance metrics.
  • Build, mentor, and retain a diverse, high-performing team of engineering leads and senior technologists.
  • Set strategic goals for the department that align with the organization's objectives.
  • Develop and execute departmental strategies, policies, and procedures ensuring consistency across the organization wherever possible.

Technical Authority and Talent Evaluation

  • Maintain enough technical fluency in modern development frameworks (e.g., .NET, Java, Node.js, React, AWS/Azure) to support and mentor engineering teams on federal contracts.
  • Provide surge support to contracts just starting to launch and then transition them to full time staff.
  • Evaluate technical talent through code reviews, technical interviews, and coding challenge design; ensure a consistent, equitable bar for engineering excellence.
  • Provide architectural guidance and oversight on complex initiatives, ensuring scalability, security, and maintainability.
  • Support technical troubleshooting and solutioning across delivery teams as a senior advisor.

Business Development & Capture Support

  • Partner with BD and proposal teams to craft compelling, technically sound solutions in RFI/RFP responses.
  • Serve as solution architect and author for technical and management volumes.
  • Support pricing and staffing strategies, aligning labor categories to realistic technical expectations.
  • Lead or contribute to technical challenges, oral presentations, and proposal sessions.
  • Identify and pursue organic growth and follow-on opportunities within existing programs.

Delivery Excellence & Compliance

  • Oversee engineering delivery across programs to ensure adherence to VA and federal security, accessibility, and compliance standards.
  • Reinforce DevSecOps best practices, automated testing, and continuous delivery pipelines.
  • Drive consistency in documentation, CI/CD, and testing frameworks across teams.
  • Ensure engineering delivery aligns with contractual requirements, IronArch standards, and client expectations.

Culture, Mentorship, and Values

  • Model IronArch's People First and Deliver and Inspire Excellence values.
  • Create pathways for professional growth within engineering, including technical mentorship and leadership development programs.
  • Promote inclusion, transparency, and collaboration across distributed teams.
  • Foster knowledge sharing through internal communities of practice, technical brown-bags, and learning initiatives.
Requirements

Preferred Experience

  • 12+ years of professional software engineering experience, including 3+ years in a senior leadership or departmental management role.
  • Strong background in modern application development (e.g., .NET, Java, Node.js, or cloud-native architectures).
  • Proven experience leading and evaluating coding challenges and technical assessments for hiring.
  • Demonstrated success contributing to capture efforts and proposal development for federal IT programs.
  • Deep understanding of Agile, DevSecOps, and CI/CD delivery in federal or enterprise-scale environments.
  • Experience managing engineering delivery under compliance frameworks (FedRAMP, FISMA, Section 508).
  • U.S. citizenship and ability to obtain or maintain a Public Trust or higher clearance.
  • Knowledge of speech recognition, NLU/NLP, and conversational AI integrations.
  • Familiarity with federal security/compliance standards (FedRAMP, FICAM, NIST SP 800-63).
