This role is part of Advanced Concepts and Enterprise Engineering (ACE), supporting Blue Origin's mission of millions of people living and working in space for the benefit of Earth. The team fosters innovation and drives engineering workflows of the future, shared solutions and standards, simplicity and lower costs, and manufacturable design.

As part of a hardworking team of specialists, technicians, and engineers you will design and deliver production tooling, handling solutions, and test equipment that make building and verifying solar products safe, clean, and reliable. You will pair sound mechanical analysis with practical commissioning to create robust, instrumented, semiautomated stations, and document their safe operation, calibration, and upkeep. You will embed quality and operator safety into every design, collaborate closely with Manufacturing and Automation to define process windows and inprocess checks, manage suppliers from concept through acceptance, and support test campaigns and continuous improvement in a fastmoving, crossdisciplinary, geographically distributed R&D environment.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Design assembly fixtures/tools, handling carts, transport containers, and TVAC mounts for solar products

  • Develop deployment test rigs with instrumentation (load cells, encoders, strain gauges, etc.) and safety interlocks

  • Design/develop grippers for fragile panel transfers (vacuum/softgrip/compliant alignment)

  • Own designs from cradle-to-grave optimizing (safety, cost, quality, cycle time, delivery, reliability, life, maintenance/refurbishment)

  • Integrate PLC/HMI and basic robotics/vision for semiautomated stations

  • Perform fixture FEA for stiffness/stability; tolerance and alignment analysis

  • Collaborate with Manufacturing on process windows and inprocess inspection

  • Manage vendor selection, quotes, and acceptance criteria for tooling/GSE

  • Support deployment and environmental tests; troubleshoot rigs and instrumentation

  • Work effectively in a scrappy cross-disciplinary R&D environment with a geographically distributed team

Minimum Qualifications:

  • BS in ME/Manufacturing; 2-5 years designing fixtures, handling carts, transport containers, TVAC mounts

  • Instrumented test rig design including the controller and/or DAQ system

  • Basic PLC/HMI integration and robotics/vision exposure; support FAT/SAT

  • Experience with CAD, both creating 3D models and technical drawings

  • Fixture FEA for stiffness/stability; tolerance/alignment analysis; GD&T proficiency

  • Compliance with contamination control, ESD, ergonomics, and safety

Preferred Qualifications:

  • 4+ years; deeper robotics/vision/PLC programming experience

  • Experience designing compliant EOAT/grippers for fragile parts; vacuum/cleanroom fixtures

  • Proven deployment/environmental test support and instrumentation troubleshooting

  • Experience with mechanical and weldment design and component integration

  • Experience with creating fabrication and installation drawings

  • Understanding of common manufacturing materials/techniques, GD&T, and tolerance stack-up analysis

  • Ability to work on multiple projects in parallel

  • Experience with custom machine design: motors, actuators, linear rails/actuators, pneumatics, bearings, etc.

  • Required for certain Job Profiles: Ability to obtain and maintain Merchant Mariner Credential, which includes pre-employment and random drug testing as well as DOT physical
