Description The Manager, Nursing Quality will manage the day-to day operations of the Nursing Quality Program. Responsible for the operational success of the Nursing Quality Program and assist in defining strategy/direction in accordance with national standards and Children's National Hospital standards and administrative policies. Lead nursing staff in assessment of systems, identification of nurse sensitive measures, and implementation of performance improvement methodology and evidence-based practice to improve nursing outcomes. Lead and facilitate quality improvement activities related to nursing. Provide data collection, aggregation, and analysis expertise. Work in collaboration with nursing leadership teams to support the plans, development, implementation and evaluation of nursing quality outcomes. Facilitate Nursing Quality Activities within the division of Patient Care Service. Lead and/or support the development of New Nursing Quality Indicators. Facilitate and lead Quality Improvement teams. Partner with the Executive Director of Nursing Quality, Professional Practice and Director of Nursing Science to elevate the quality of nursing practice, using Quality Indicator outcomes data. Lead the translation of information obtained through Quality Improvement activities into Research studies as a method to formulate new knowledge. Assume responsibility to achieve objectives and commitments related to Nursing Quality and hold staff to the same standards. Hire, train, develop, and direct assigned staff to meet operational objectives related to the Nursing Quality Program.
Qualifications Minimum Education
Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) MSN and Doctoral Degree. (Required)

Minimum Work Experience
7 years (Required)

Required Skills/Knowledge
Comfort with use of computers, computerized technology and applications. Open to learning new software and web based applications.

Required Licenses and Certifications
Registered Nurse District of Columbia (Required)

Functional Accountabilities
Nursing Quality
  • Oversee implementation, measurement, and monitoring of all nursing quality indicators and nurse sensitive indicators; coordinate data collection, aggregation, and analysis for all nursing quality indicators and nurse sensitive indicators
  • Serve as a leader and resource for Nursing Quality Committee.
  • Create and interpret the monthly Quality Report to Clinical Improvement and Nursing Research Council; participate on other nursing committees as appropriate.
  • Ensure outcomes and practice improvements are shared with nursing at all levels and in multiple ways; monitor care outcomes in an effort to ensure gains are maintained.
  • Actively participate in conferences and professional organizations related to Nursing Quality and Nursing Research; attend conferences/seminars as appropriate; communicate new information from such events to appropriate staff.
  • Assist with the dissemination of Nursing Quality, EBP and/or Research with all professional RN's through new hire orientation, unit inservices and other forums.
Performance Improvement
  • Facilitate teams to utilize performance improvement methodology including: Process redesign, PDCA, PDSA and rapid cycle approach, FMEA, RCA and others.
  • Design, develop, implement and evaluate performance improvement initiatives; use Excel, PowerPoint, Visio or similar software packages to present data, interventions and outcomes.
  • Track and trend data to evaluate effectiveness of interventions; disseminate data internally through reports, rounds, and scorecards to facilitate decision-making and externally to national databases, such as NDNQI.
  • Provide education on PI methods, benchmarking, and nurse sensitive measures; mentor staff in research and quality proposal development.
  • Lead the translation of information obtained through Quality Improvement activities into Research studies as a method to formulate new knowledge.
  • Collaborate with nursing and organizational leadership to implement Fiscal Year goals and other identified initiatives.
  • Collaborate with members of the Regulatory Department and the Hospital's Performance Improvement Department.
Magnet & Regulatory
  • Serve as a liaison between Children's National and the National Database of Nursing Quality Indicators
  • Act as NDNQI Site Coordinator ensures all NSI
  • Maintain and share current knowledge of ANCC Magnet Recognitions NSI requirements and Empirical Outcome expectations
  • Maintain and facilitate periodic updates and dissemination of Manget NSI clinical outcome, RN satisfaction and patient satisfaction scorecards
  • Facilitate process improvement for key areas of data deficiencies (in collaboration with organization QI and and Service Excellence staff)
  • Maintain a current knowledge of:
  • 1) Trends and issues in health care, nursing practice, nursing education, nursing research, JCAHO standards
  • 2) Organizational policies and procedures related to clinical practice and the legal implications for practice, education and research
  • 3) Structure and hierarchy of the organization
  • Maintain collegial, trust-based relationships with RN's and patient care services staff to assess organizational and interdepartmental project reactions periodically , and as assigned
  • Contribute and advance scholarly nursing publication and promote opportunities for direct care staff to strategically engage in academic and scholarly opportunities to advance EBP , quality , Nursing Research, and clinical standards.
Budget
  • Contribute to development and monitoring of operating and capital budgets.
  • Implement actions to facilitate budget requirement.
Human Resources Management
  • In collaboration with the Director of Nursing Research and Quality Outcomes, hire, train, develop and direct assigned staff to meet departmental objectives.
  • Provide timely coaching and performance feedback.
  • Deploy staff appropriately to meet business objectives.
