Job Summary


The anticipated duration of this assignment is approximately 3 months.

The Medical Assistant (MA) supports patient care activities within the Transfusion Services department. Guided by UCSF Ambulatory Services policies and procedures, the MA performs patient care tasks, supports clinic operations, and contributes to positive patient experiences. Responsibilities include patient intake, vital signs, assisting with procedures, maintaining clinical spaces, coordinating clinic flow, and ensuring accurate documentation.

Key Responsibilities:

Clinical Duties:

  • Perform routine clinical tasks, including vital signs, height, weight, pain screening, and documentation of chief complaints.
  • Document interpreter use and coordinate interpreting services (in person, phone, or video).
  • Assist nurses, providers, and patients with exam preparation and procedures.
  • Complete competencies required for departmental procedures.
  • Transport patients safely.
  • Monitor patient flow throughout the clinic.
  • Perform peripheral blood draws as needed.
  • Obtain specimens and perform Point-of-Care Testing, including QA/QC and EKGs.
  • Maintain and update clinical logs (e.g., temperature logs, disaster cabinet logs, crash cart logs).
  • Perform clinical tasks accurately and in a timely manner.
  • Follow all infection control, safety, and administrative policies, including JCAHO/Title 22 requirements.

Communication & Patient Interaction

  • Demonstrate courtesy, professionalism, and adherence to UCSF Telephone Standards.
  • Maintain a welcoming, helpful environment in alignment with UCSF House Standards.
  • Notify providers of delays or service issues and support punctuality to ensure optimal clinic schedules.
  • Communicate delays to front office staff and make announcements to patients when delays exceed 30 minutes.
  • Share relevant information with care team members.
  • Report issues or concerns to nursing staff or appropriate supervisors.
  • Offer suggestions for operational improvements.
  • Assist patients in resolving concerns using conflict-management skills.

Operations & Clinic Maintenance

  • Maintain clean, well-stocked exam rooms, hub rooms, and lab spaces.
  • Order and maintain supplies; support lab equipment maintenance.
  • Review and print lab results for providers when needed.
  • Coordinate rest and meal breaks with team members to ensure clinic coverage.
  • Follow infection control procedures as outlined in the Infection Control Manual.
  • Participate in quality improvement and customer service initiatives, such as wait-time studies or data collection.

Other Duties

  • Perform additional patient care-related tasks as assigned.

Department Description

UCSF's Temporary Employment Program (TEP) recruits and hires temporary employees for immediate clerical and technical support services to UCSF Departments and various off-campus locations. UCSF departments deploy temporary employees to work on special projects, fill in for regular employees who are on vacation or leave, or to temporarily fill a vacant position during recruitment. Frequently temporary employees become successful candidates for career and limited appointment positions.

Required Qualifications


  • Certification from an approved Medical Assistant program, or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
  • Experience working with oncology patients.
  • One year of experience as a Medical Assistant or Hospital Assistant in a medical practice.
  • Knowledge and abilities essential for successful job performance.
  • Current American Heart Association CPR Certification.
  • Peripheral blood draw experience.

Preferred Qualifications


  • CPT1 Certification.

License/Certification


  • Current AHA CPR/BLS certification
