Job Summary

Biomedical Engineering Services (BES) provides on-site biomedical technical support services to maintain and repair equipment for patient-care operations of the Department of Public Health Community Health Network. Sites include Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital, the Behavioral Health Center and the Paramedic Division of the SFFD. BES provides equipment management services for all inventoried biomedical equipment. Current devices under management have an asset value of approximately $40 million. Services provided include:

  • initial inspection, testing, and acceptance of new patient care biomedical equipment
  • physical installation of equipment
  • existing equipment preventive maintenance and inspection
  • same day emergency and routine equipment service
  • investigation of medical equipment unusual occurrences, recalls, and hazard alerts
  • project administration for high tech equipment installations
  • consultation on equipment related issues, e.g. pre-purchase evaluations, equipment design, development and modifications, evaluation of service contracts, etc.
The Manager of Biomedical Engineering is responsible for ensuring the above.

Under the terms of the University contract with the City and County of San Francisco, the Manager of Biomedical Engineering Services establishes department priorities, develops and implements policies and procedures, and directs the activities of the Biomedical Engineering Department at Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital. Key BES manager relationships include Facilities Management, UCSF Clinical Engineering, Nursing leadership, Infection Control, Materials Management, and Risk Management.

The final salary and offer components are subject to additional approvals based on UC policy.

Your placement within the salary range is dependent on a number of factors including your work experience and internal equity within this position classification at UCSF. For positions that are represented by a labor union, placement within the salary range will be guided by the rules in the collective bargaining agreement.

The salary range for this position is $118,300 - $268,900 (Annual Rate).

Required Qualifications


  • Bachelor's degree in related area and or equivalent experience or training
  • Minimum 5 years of progressively responsible experience in operations management end/or as a Biomedical Equipment Technician or equivalent experience (i.e., with biomedical equipment, biomedical engineering, or clinical engineering)
  • Knowledge and applied background in biomedical equipment management, clinical engineering techniques, server I network monitoring, and security. Demonstrated ability to apply knowledge in an acute care setting to improve clinical workflows and medical device interactions and integration
  • Knowledge of relevant biomedical equipment, safety regulations and performance standards. Ability to apply policy knowledge to suggest improvements to compliance risks and regulatory issues
  • Advanced user of internal clinical engineering technology and systems. Knowledge of available information technology software for clinical specialty area
  • Leadership skills in employee supervision and HR administration to effectively lead and motivate others. Conflict resolution skills to resolve personnel issues and counsel assigned staff to develop cooperative working relationships
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively manage multiple priorities in a complex, challenging environment. Demonstrate adaptability and flexibility, anticipate and effectively handles change
  • Ability to organize division operations in an efficient and effective manner through improving clinical workflows and equipment management processes and systems
  • Ability to collaborate within and across departments to integrate daily clinical engineering activities and resolve problems. Interpersonal skills to maintain professional relationships with peers, senior management, clinical staff in functional area, and assigned staff
  • Proven analytical abilities and problem-solving skills to quickly evaluate complex issues and identify options for resolution. Demonstrates sound judgement
  • Verbal and written communication skills to effectively communicate through all mediums and with all groups. Demonstrated abilities to listen actively, persuade, advise, and counsel
  • Demonstrated knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite, especially MS Excel

Preferred Qualifications


  • Master's degree in related area
  • Broad knowledge of medical center, HR and UC policies and processes
  • Professional Engineer license
  • Certification in Clinical Engineering specialty
  • Certified Biomedical Electronics Technician by International Certification Commission
