Principal Engineer - Fire Protection Design Engineer - Alarm and Detection Device DUTIES Dene scope of technical programs and develop eective, quality solutions to challenges which involve unique or controversial problems. Creatively meet all company and industry requirements and apply site systems to achieve quality, timely and cost-eective results. Give quality guidance and assistance to less senior professionals on related tasks. Apply technical experience in eld of specialization or broad-based experience in multiple technical elds, to resolve complex problems. Incorporate advanced technical practices and a variety of complex features such as complicated technical requirements, application of new or special materials or processes and dicult coordination or oversight requirements into problem solving and program planning. Provide leadership in determining solutions to complex problems and be recognized as having expertise in a functional area(s) of technical expertise. Provide direction and position responsibility both inside and outside department lines on programs seeking new approaches to problems and new application of existing engineering or scientic principles. Evaluate the results of programs and prepares reports and recommendations based on these evaluations. Identify and recommend improvements where established technology components and methodology are inadequate for solution. Keep informed of the advancement of technology as applied through one's area of technology. Prepare plans including schedules, budgets and personnel requirements for solving technical tasks identied by management. Develop schedules, monitor progress, monitor expenditures of budget and review quality of work performed. Communicate results and objectives verbally and in manuscripts form to customers colleagues and management. Occasionally prepare reports for external publication. Enhance expertise in eld through leadership in local technical societies. Demonstrate creative ability through medium of patent disclosures, problem solving, engineering reports, technical papers and articles. Work Hours: Up to a 40-hour work week is scheduled. SRNS utilizes various work schedules including 5/8s (8 hour/day; ve days per week), 4/10's (10 hours/day; four days per week), and 9/80's (9 hours/day, ve days on week AA and four days on week BB. Work week excludes SRNS holidays. Each workday has 30-minute lunch. Overtime will be expected at times to meet deliverables and will be utilized at the discretion of the Manager. REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS: EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE Education: Ph.D. degree in applicable science or engineering discipline and 5+ years' experience. OR A MS with 8+ years' experience. OR A BS with 10+ years' experience or more. OTHER REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS Area Security Access: : Candidate must be able to obtain and maintain a DOE "Q" security clearance. An active DOE clearance is not initially required to perform assigned duties. After award, the selected candidate will be notified when to apply for a clearance based on specific work assignments. PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS Candidates who have possessed an active DOE clearance (L or Q) within the past two (2) years are preferred. Additional Duties - Provide design engineering staff augmentation support to SRNS. Primary responsibilities include engineering task analysis, walk-downs, design development and generation of design output documents including but not limited to: Location Plans, Connection Diagrams, Conduit / Block Diagrams, Logic Diagrams, Panel Detail Drawings, Piping & Instrumentation Diagrams, and Battery Loading Calculations in accordance with national consensus codes and standards. Provide technical support to site construction forces, start-up & testing, suppliers or subcontract personnel. Prepare Data Sheets, Statements of Work, Procurement Specications, Design Build Specications, and Purchase Requisitions. - Engineering services shall be provided using SRNS processes and procedures. Programmatic guidance will be provided by SRNS. Additional Education - Graduate of an ABET accredited Fire Protection Engineering program. OR - BS degree in an engineering discipline and at least one of the following: - Registered Professional Engineer in Fire Protection. - Society of Fire Protection Engineers (SFPE) NICET Level III/IV certication in the Fire Alarm, Detection and Signaling area of expertise - Professional or Fellow Member in the SFPE Additional Experience Qualications - The following qualications are required for this position: Candidate must demonstrate ten (10) years of recent design experience, four (4) of which shall be in the following area of expertise: - Fire Alarm, Detection and Signaling Design - General knowledge of electrical/control systems, connection diagrams, layout plans, logic diagrams, panel layout details, P&ID's, and battery loading calculations - Working knowledge of NFPA Codes and Standards, and National Consensus Codes and Standards such as NFPA 13, NFPA 70, NFPA 72, NFPA 90A, NFPA 101, IBC, and various other ISA and IEEE standards - Experience with 2D MicroStation Computer Aided Drafting and Design (CADD) - Ability to operate Windows Microsoft Office Applications - The following qualications are preferred for this position: - Previous SRS Design Engineering or DOE facility experience - Prociency in using MicroStation 2D Computer Aided Drafting and Design (CADD) software. - Previous SRS design experience and familiarity with the processes and procedures for providing engineering support to SRS facilities. Additional Work Requirements - Candidate must be able to perform weekly eld walk downs of the job site for the engineering work being performed. These walk downs may involve construction sites with uneven surfaces and work in progress, walking for distances of over half a mile, climbing of ladders to access remote areas, dressing out in protective clothing and environments where a respirator is required. - Please note - Travel cannot take place until it has been approved by procurement via a fully funded requisition and added to the Task Order Authorization. A justication, travel locations, estimated cost, and dates of travel must be provided prior to procurement approval. SRNS will not reimburse for travel to conferences or trainings. Please remember, all rates are fully burdened and should include all costs outside of direct business travel. -
