The Stroke Center at NYU Langone Hospital-Suffolk is designated by the New York State Department of Health as a Primary Stroke Center, with expert neurologists available to provide treatment 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Position Summary:
We have an exciting opportunity to join our team as a Supervisor, Laboratory - Microbiology - Full Time, Days - Clinical Labs-Microbiology - Full-Time - M.

In this role, the successful candidate Manages the day-to-day operation of one section of the clinical or anatomical laboratory. Has responsibility for the quality and timeliness of testing. Has responsibility for equipment, supplies, financial management, schedules and personnel management. The Supervisor is qualified as a medical technologist pursuant to the provisions of section 58-1.5(b) of the Subpart and has had at least six years of pertinent clinical laboratory experience subsequent to qualifying of which as least two years have been spent working in a clinical laboratory having a director at the doctoral level. The clinical laboratory or blood bank shall be part of a hospital, university, health department, medical research institution or other institution which provides equivalent training.

Job Responsibilities:

1. Developmental
Performance Expectations:
* Evaluates new products, procedures and equipment.
* Anticipates and recommends the need for new equipment and procedures.
* Evaluates, implements and monitors appropriate workflow changes to enhance total laboratory performance.
* Participates in total laboratory development for pre and post analytical workflows.
* Sets priorities, assesses responsibilities and establishes timetables for section.
* Keeps Laboratory manual current as it pertains to their department.
* Organizes and monitors the daily operations for section
* Monitors staff - attendance, personality, and dress code. Takes appropriate action if required.
* Monitors safety and infection control compliance and corrects any issues as needed.

2. Human Resources
Performance Expectations:
* Assists in development of job description, competency assessment and evaluation.
* Develops work schedules and assignments, monitors compliance insuring adequate coverage.
* Assists in selection and interviewing of perspective employees.
* Counsels personnel in accordance with job description, hospital policy and current standards in laboratory medicine.
* Assists in resolution of personnel issues.
* Communicates effectively with staff.
* Attends H.R. related meetings and training sessions

3. Financial
Performance Expectations:
* Monitors all expenditures to ensure section is utilizing financial resources efficiently.
* Maintains proper inventory to minimize outdating while ensuring adequate supplies.
* Evaluates quality and cost effectiveness of new or replacement supplies and equipment and procedure.
* Seeks new means to meet budget objectives.
* Evaluates staffing needs and organizes schedule to minimize additional coverage or OT

4. Operational Management
Performance Expectations:
* Functions as section resource in resolution of difficult and complex problems requiring the ability to troubleshoot procedures and equipment.
* Maintains, reviews and updates all manuals, documents and procedures in section in a timely fashion.
* Establishes, maintains and documents a preventative maintenance program to ensure equipment, instruments, and reagents are in good working condition. Recognized malfunctions and takes appropriate corrective action.
* Establishes, maintains, and monitors a comprehensive quality control program to ensure accuracy and validity of results. Takes appropriate corrective action as necessary.
* Ensures that procedures are performed according to established protocol. Reviews and assesses results for accuracy and validity.
* Organizes and maintains section statistics, records and computer files.
* Monitors receipt of proficiency test specimens, integrates specimens into workflow and completes questionnaires. Reviews result of proficiency survey and takes corrective action when indicated.
* When necessary, assumes administrative responsibility for the entire laboratory.
* Participates in Hospital and Departmental P.I. program.
* Participates in related hospital committees as requested.
* Completes all reports, appraisals, training guide in a timely fashion.
* Ability to organize work and use time effectively.

5. Educational
Performance Expectations:
* Directs the training of new employees and medical technology students. Evaluates their progress and adjusts training schedule accordingly.
* Provide and encourage ongoing continuing education to employees in the form of professional journals, videos, practical experience and other means.
* Maintains a current knowledge of the field through participation in professional organizations, seminars and professional literature.
* Functions as a resource and liaison with other members of the medical profession by providing information and recommendations on request.
* Effective precepta to new personnel and students.
* Encourages staff participation in evaluation of new products and method.

6. General Performance
Performance Expectations:
* Demonstrates leadership qualities and support the development of colleagues through role modeling, acknowledgment and guidance.
* Develops and maintains cooperative working relationships with physicians and patient care department personnel in order to gather and exchange patient information, resolve problems and improve patient care.
* Is able to step in and work in the department as a working technologist or phlebotomist.
* Keeps Administrative Director and other personnel informed of changes in procedure, policy or technique.
* Ensures that all safety requirements are met and reports issues.
* Attends all required management meetings and participates in resolution of laboratory services issues.
* Ability to utilize good judgement in handling situations not covered by written or verbal instructions.
* Flexibility and open to change to meet the changing needs of Health Care.

7. Other Functions and Performance Expectations
Performance Expectations:
* Maintains a consistent pattern of attendance
* Reports to assigned area on time for scheduled shift
* Adheres to hospital/department dress code. Arrives to work appropriately dressed, well groomed and neat.
* Completes all hospital requirements at designated time, (i.e. annual assessment, educational, MedNetTra)
* Conforms to policies regarding confidentiality of information
* Follows call-in procedure when sick, late or absent.

Minimum Qualifications:
To qualify you must have a BS degree in Medical Technology or related fields.
NYS Education Department Clinical Laboratory Technologist License or Eligible
Six years progressive experience in laboratory medicine (58-1.5) N.Y.S.
Analytical skills necessary to develop procedures and resolve complex technical problems, exercise independent judgement.
Interpersonal skills necessary to direct and assign work to subordinates at several levels
Strong Instrumentation and computer background as appropriate
Ability to manage staff, schedules, inventory and Human Resources issues
