Job Summary

he External Affairs intern supports the organization's advocacy and communications activities. The intern contributes to ServiceSource's engagement with members of Congress, federal agencies, nonprofit and industry partners, and other key stakeholders. This position supports the VP of External Affairs and the communications team based in Oakton, Virginia.

The intern works with the team to support the development, execution, and refinement of ServiceSource's advocacy, education, and communications strategic plan. A primary goal of the strategic plan is to cultivate relationships to further ServiceSource's position as a leading provider in disability employment. As part of the team, the intern is responsible for helping enhance ServiceSource's visibility with key audiences to advance employment initiatives for people with disabilities.

Primary Duties

  • Support external outreach to educate, engage and advance organizational objectives with elected officials, policymakers, business partners, and other key stakeholders.

  • Monitor, research, and report on legislative and public policy activities that impact the ServiceSource mission.

  • Assist with development of print materials and digital content to support ServiceSource advocacy and communications activities.

  • Support ServiceSource community engagement including ServiceSource special events.

Additional Responsibilities

  • Perform other responsibilities as assigned.

Qualifications: Education, Experience, and Certification(s)

  • High school diploma required.

  • Bachelor's degree in relevant field preferred.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Strong written and oral communication skills.

  • Experience conducting research and analyzing complex issues.

  • Experience in public affairs, social media, strategic communications.

  • Knowledge of government affairs and public policy issues such as disability, employment and/or federal procurement.

  • Strong interpersonal skills, sound judgment, and self-awareness.

  • A team player mentality and a willingness to pitch in with any and all tasks.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is required to sit, talk, and hear. The employee will need to walk within an office setting. The employee may occasionally lift or move office products and supplies, up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.

Work Environment

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally exposed to outside weather conditions. The noise level in the work environment is usually quiet. Local and regional travel likely.
