What to Expect
Tesla's battery cells are the foundation of every product we create, requiring innovative cell architectures with cutting-edge performance and unprecedented manufacturing scale. In a fast-paced and dynamic environment, passion and self-motivation are essential to push boundaries. The Cell Reliability Engineer will focus on evaluating and forecasting the performance and longevity of lithium-ion battery cells for Tesla's energy products. This role involves identifying reliability limits, critical failure modes, and determining warranty reserves using statistical models and real-world data. Collaboration with cross-functional engineering teams is key to integrating insights into product development and warranty strategies.

What You'll Do
  • Develop and implement robust models to predict the lifetime of lithium-ion cells using data from accelerated life tests, real-world usage, and simulated stress conditions
  • Design and execute reliability tests to simulate real-world conditions, identify failure points, and validate lifetime predictions while establishing protocols for accelerated testing
  • Evaluate reliability limits by analyzing limit samples to define acceptable performance thresholds for product quality assurance
  • Lead cross-functional risk analysis for new designs using tools such as DFMEA, NUDD, and fault tree analysis
  • Identify critical failures in lithium-ion cells, including capacity loss, impedance growth, and short-circuiting, while establishing predictive models for failure forecasting
  • Analyze battery testing data, including charge/discharge cycles and temperature variation, to enhance predictive models for lifespan forecasting
  • Collaborate with product development, engineering, and customer support teams to integrate lifetime forecasting insights into designs, quality assurance, and warranty planning

What You'll Bring
  • Bachelor's Degree in Materials Science, Chemical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or equivalent experience
  • Strong understanding of lithium-ion battery chemistry and degradation mechanisms
  • Experience with statistical modeling and data analysis for reliability and lifetime forecasting
  • Proficiency in designing and executing reliability tests for energy storage systems
  • Familiarity with risk analysis tools such as DFMEA, NUDD, and fault tree analysis
  • Ability to work effectively in cross-functional teams and communicate complex technical concepts
  • Experience with battery testing equipment and data analysis software
