Position Summary

Reporting to the Collection Management Librarian, the Circulation Library Associate is responsible for ensuring the smooth daily operations of services held at the Circulation Desk and Learning Commons in the Boxer Library. Key responsibilities include circulation of library materials, helping library users with technology in the Learning Commons, assisting the Collection Management Librarian in upkeep of the library collections, general maintenance of the library spaces to ensure that they are clean and organized, and collaboration with other members of the library team to support efficient delivery of library service.

Building upon the interprofessional mission of RFUMS, the library staff work as a team with each member contributing to the team's success through their own expertise and knowledge while emphasizing individual team member well-being. Essential Duties & Responsibilities

  • Support the use of materials in the library's physical and electronic collections by performing tasks such as retrieving & checking out materials, performing basic inventory, creating and updating patron records in the online catalog, answering basic questions about the library's website, and checking links when asked. Also participate in the cross-training of new library team members regarding the tasks listed above.
  • Assist with the use of the space within the Learning Commons by facilitating library study room reservations while also assisting library users in printing materials, troubleshooting issues when they occur, and escalating printer issues to appropriate parties, such as the Collection Management Librarian and the Information Technology helpdesk.
  • Support the Collection Management Librarian in the maintenance of the print collection by shelving and shifting materials, contributing to inventory projects of higher complexity, and updating Circulation Desk policy documentation when changes occur.
  • General maintenance of the library environment, including cleaning dry-erase boards, rebooting/troubleshooting computers/printers, returning furniture to original location, performing daily space counts, monitoring areas in the Learning Commons such as the Donation Station and Snack Zone, and submitting work orders to appropriate campus departments when items need to be repaired.
  • Connect library users with appropriate members of the library team when they require assistance.
  • Contribute to the development of informational materials such as handouts, posters, and guides related to services at the Circulation Desk.
  • Communicate and collaborate with other members of the library team in relevant committees and work groups.
  • Perform other duties as assigned, as needed.

Required Education & Experience

  • High school diploma or GED
  • Basic computer and software skills

Required Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities

  • Ability to establish and maintain good working relationships with co-workers, supervisors and library users (faculty, staff, and students);
  • Flexibility to deal with multiple or unexpected tasks and patrons simultaneously;
  • Strong verbal, written communication, organizational, and problem-solving skills;
  • Willingness to learn new technologies and follow instructions;
  • Ability to thrive in a team-based environment while also working independently when necessary.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Candidates do not have to meet all of the preferred requirements to be considered. Our team values a wide variety of skills and experiences that will enrich our department and institution.
  • Experience working in a library environment;
  • Experience in providing front-line service to users, customers, or clients. This experience could be in retail, clerical, etc.
  • Library Technical Assistant (LTA) Certificate;
  • Current enrollment in a graduate-level library science program.

Selected candidate must have the mental and physical capabilities to perform the essential functions of the position with or without reasonable accommodations. Limited physical effort required; light lifting of less than 20 lbs. and pushing rolling carts.
