Job Summary

The English Faculty position begins in Fall 2026 and is housed within the Reading & English Department at Phoenix College, a learning-focused institution. The successful candidate will provide instruction to students from diverse backgrounds and cultures in Freshman Composition/Research, Developmental English, and English Humanities through on-site and/or synchronous learning modalities.

Essential Functions

Supervises and instructs students from diverse backgrounds, in classroom and/or synchronous settings using a variety of presentation techniques

Develops course syllabi and materials that include learning-centered strategies to engage students and promote student success; creates instructional materials and develops curriculum that demonstrates innovation in teaching by focusing on student learning, retention and achievement; incorporates instructional technology and alternative delivery of courses; instructs in both traditional and non-traditional settings such as Learning

Communities, short-term courses, hybrid and live-online courses; utilizes college and departmental assessment tools; participates in continuous evaluation and improvement of teaching and learning.

Assists and responds to problems/requests from students during in-person office hours, virtual office hours, and electronic communication; serves on collaborative work teams with faculty, staff, administration, and community stakeholders, keeps Student Support hours of accountability.

Remains current with new trends and developments in the field through attendance at conferences, seminars, and workshops, and active within the community; engages in the academic life of the college by participating in district-wide, campus and departmental activities, including Department meetings, committees, and projects.

Minimum Qualifications

Master's degree or higher in the teaching field

OR

Master's degree or higher in any field with 18 graduate credit hours in the teaching field

Desired Qualifications
  1. Doctorate degree in English (ENG), Rhetoric (RHET), Composition (COMP), Literature (LIT), Creative Writing (CRW), English Education (ENGED), Journalism/New Media Studies (JRN), Teaching English as a Second Language (ESL/TOESL), Linguistics (LIN)
  2. Recent experience teaching English in a community college setting, preferably within the last six (6) semesters.
  3. Experience teaching in a community college for 3 or more years
  4. Effective written communication skills (Will be screened by the committee utilizing the submitted cover letter and resume).
  5. Knowledge of and/or experience with curriculum and teaching strategies to address the needs of students with a broad array of abilities.
  6. Knowledge of the philosophy and principles of Guided Pathways and/or Fields of Interest
  7. One year of full-time, relevant MCCCD experience within the previous two years

  • MCCCD does not sponsor individuals for any type of work visa
  • Travel to campus during interview/selection process will be at candidate's own expense
  • May require prolonged periods of viewing a computer screen
  • May be required to lift or carry up to #25 lbs
  • May be required to teach evening, weekend and/or online classes depending on needs of the Department
