Savannah River National Laboratory is seeking a Senior Classification Analyst. This position is responsible for providing leadership, oversight, and technical guidance to resolve considerably complex issues having division- and/or site-wide implications. Establish technical programs necessary to support state-of-the-art capabilities within assigned organizational and programmatic areas to the SRNL Classification Program. In this position you will have management and oversight of the SRNL Classification Program and the classification of scientific, technical, and other information as well as provide Unclassified Controlled Nuclear Information (UCNI) , Official Use Only (OUO), and Controlled Unclassified Information (CUI) guidance for SRNL Programs.

The Classification position will be responsible for working collaboratively and collegially with peers in the SRNL Classification Office to support the Laboratories CO (Classification Officer) in successfully implementing the Laboratory's Classification Program in accordance with DOE Order 475.2B, Identifying Classified Information, providing innovative approaches to enhance work process efficiency. Read and comprehend the classification guides issued to the Laboratory by the US Government sponsors and analyze their applicability to the diverse and complex national security problems being address in the Laboratory. Assist and participate in training new Derivative Classifiers (DCs), supporting a broad range of technical programs and briefing all Lab employees on classification matters. As needed, collaboratively develop interpretive classification to assist the Laboratory's DCs by summarizing classification guidance from diverse sources in the context of specific, complex, and interdisciplinary problem/project/program.


  • Reviewing scientific papers and reports to identify scientific and technical information that requires protection or control in accordance with federal regulation and DOE/National Nuclear Security Administration Classification policies and guidelines.
  • Maintaining operational awareness of classification UCNI issues.
  • Maintaining a thorough knowledge and understanding of the ever-changing Federal classification policies, laws, and statutes.
  • Evaluating the effect of new or revised classification guidance upon ongoing SRNL missions.
  • Providing guidance and leadership to all SRNL Derivative Classifiers and UCNI Reviewing Officials so that they maintain a thorough knowledge and understanding of their area of classification authority and can competently execute their DC role win the boundaries of their authorization.
  • Ensuring SRNL staff maintains a healthy awareness of classified subject areas, their responsibilities for protecting classified information and the resources available to them for ensuring classified information is identified and protected.
  • Providing recommendations to resolve classification UCNI issues affecting SRNL mission objectives.
  • Interpreting policies and developing procedures for SRNL staff to ensure compliance with federal requirements related to identification of classified, and UNCI.
  • Analyzing complex information and provided interpretations to identify the classification or controls that will be required on programmatic work products or process to adhere to current classification guidance from DOE and other federal agencies.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Motivated self- starter with the ability to work independently and participate creatively in collaborative teams across the laboratory and DOE complex.
  • Ability to function well in a fast-paced research environment, set priorities to accomplish multiple takes with deadlines and adapt to ever changing needs.

The Senior Classification Analyst will collaboratively develop and implement comprehensive technical guidance for DCs supporting Laboratory programs and organizations to identify classified aspects of work with specific programmatic areas. Work collaboratively with classification experts at other Laborites and Federal agencies as needed to ensure consistent application and interpretation of relevant classification guidance.

Position requires approval by DOE-HQ Office of Classification (AU-60). The Program Classification Officer must be a Derivative Classifier prior to appointment and must be a Derivative Declassifier within 6 months of appointment per DOE O 475.2B.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in a physical science (e.g., chemistry, physics, biology) or engineering (chemical, nuclear, electrical, mechanical) field, and 10 + years of relevant experience in classification or reviewing research and development documents or a Masters Degree and 8 years of relevant experience.
  • For ability to obtain and maintain a security clearance, US Citizenship is Legally Required

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with SRNL's growing national security missions, technical experience and expertise in executing relevant programs across NNSA's Defense Programs and/or Defense Nuclear Nonproliferation.
  • Experience in applying current DOE classification guides in such areas as nuclear weapons design and test, military applications, arms control, nuclear nonproliferation, nuclear materials production, intelligence/counterintelligences, to SRNL National security programs.
  • Be able to defend decisions based on independent analysis of technical information.
  • Have advanced expertise in communications as demonstrated by developing, writing and delivering presentations covering complex scientific and technical subjects.
  • In-depth knowledge of classified DOE programmatic work, including DOE-IN.
  • Demonstrated ability to balance multiple tasking a dynamic, unpredictable environment.
