Job Summary

The Rehabilitation Specialist (Speech Pathologist Clinical Fellow) shall function under the Chief Speech Pathologist and Clinical Fellow supervisor to provide evaluative, diagnostic, and treatment procedures for pediatric through geriatric patients for the Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Department. This position requires a depth of theoretical and applied knowledge for diagnosing and treating patients with augmentative communication needs, developmental speech and language disorders, acquired cognitive and language disorders, fluency, voice, dysphagia, aphasia, apraxia, and dysarthria. This position functions under the immediate supervision of a Clinical Fellow Supervisor, providing teaching and consultation with other departments, physician and therapy specialists within UCDMC, educational specialists, as well as other community agencies/service providers. Requires coordination with primary care/service providers and management of insurance authorizations.

  • American Heart Association (AHA) or American Red Cross Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification or UC Davis Health CPR
  • Must possess a master's degree in Speech Pathology
  • Must possess a temporary California RPE Speech-Language Pathology License through the Speech Pathology Examining Committee
  • Thorough knowledge of appropriate assessment instruments, test administration procedures, scoring, and interpretation
  • Knowledge of various home programs and organization into individual programs for family implementation
  • Knowledge of how patients should be responding to treatment, the average length of stay in treatment, and recognition of appropriate versus inappropriate treatment for each patient
  • Knowledge of current therapeutic and evaluative instruments
  • Knowledge of community resources
  • Interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills to clearly and effectively interact with a diverse group of individuals at all levels within the organization to secure and/or provide information to clarify situations, resolve problems, and to foster and promote the goals of the organization
  • Organizational and time management skills to prioritize workload and meet deadlines, develop and carry out assignments in an efficient and timely manner, and to provide accurate and succinct documentation of activities
  • Recordkeeping skills to maintain patient records and process necessary billing forms and treatment authorizations

  • Ability to provide instruction and supervision, as required, for student interns and medical students

Key Responsibilities

  • 70% - Function under the direction and supervision of the Chief Speech Pathologist and Clinical Fellow supervisor to perform various evaluative, diagnostic, and procedural tasks for Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, Acute Care, ICU, Pediatric, and Outpatients.
  • 15% - Contribute to the functioning of the Speech Pathology Section.
  • 10% - Maintain accurate and timely patient records and process necessary billing forms.
  • 5% - Participates in instructional activities to maintain and improve professional skills and knowledge.

Work Environment

  • UC Davis is a smoke and tobacco-free campus effective January 1, 2014.   • Must complete nine months of clinical fellowship hours and provide proof of permanent application for Speech Language Pathologist Licensure within 10 months from the date of hire or employment will result in termination.
  • Will function under the direct supervision of a Clinical Fellow supervisor as outlined by the American Speech and Hearing Association (ASHA) recommended guidelines and standards of practice.
