What to Expect

Tesla is looking for a highly motivated laboratory engineer to support advanced materials analysis with scanning electron microscopy. The SEM engineer will perform investigative imaging, compositional analysis, and microstructural analysis of cell materials to support failure analysis and optimization of QC processes for our cutting-edge Tesla battery cell manufacturing program. In this role you will work closely with quality engineers and lab technicians under the guidance of the lab manager to perform material analysis with the highest standards of safety, quality, and output. The work environment is demanding, fast paced and incredibly exciting. The ideal candidate should be ready to push their limits, as they join in highly motivated and capable team.


What You'll Do
  • Work with a team of materials scientists, engineers, chemists, and technicians performing routine quality testing and investigative analysis in a 24x7 cell manufacturing quality program
  • Operate and maintain SEMs and related equipment (detectors, preparation tools, etc.)
  • Precisely prepare diverse samples (ex. polishing, coating, sectioning) for various analyses
  • Capture high-resolution images, interpret microstructural features, and perform detailed compositional and failure analyses
  • Diagnose and resolve instrument issues, optimize imaging parameters, refine/improve current methods, and develop new sampling and imaging protocols
  • Work with various cross-functional teams across GFTX and other Tesla sites to provide technical consultation and train other on advanced SEM techniques
  • Maintain detailed records, imaging procedures, safety compliance, and report findings
  • Support the company's mission, vision, values and goals in performance of daily activities

What You'll Bring
  • Relevant professional experience and technical mastery of scanning electron microscope operation
  • Understanding of fundamental electron microscopy principles, EDS, sample preparation, and advanced SEM applications
  • Strong analytical skills for troubleshooting complex systems and experiment design
  • Ability to explain technical concepts and findings to cross-functional teams and executive leadership
  • Strong attention to detail for accurate imaging, analysis, and root cause analysis
  • Able to work both independently and in a collaborative project-focused environment, prompt and dependable, and excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Comfortable working with chemicals and hazardous materials in a laboratory environment
  • Be both capable and willing to perform all the various manual tasks involved with lab work, such as safely moving heavy objects, moving large pallets with a pallet jack, handling incoming materials, etc.
