Why work on this team:

  • We are looking for eager, curious, and technically strong engineers who want to influence both solutions and teammates.
  • There is significant opportunity for hands-on problem solving, technical ownership, and on-the-job learning as you deepen your understanding of our healthcare-focused tech stack.
  • This team directly impacts the prior authorization experience for millions of patients, helping streamline access to care.
  • This role plays a critical part in coaching and mentoring less-experienced engineers, raising overall engineering quality and maturity across the team.
  • You will help drive improvements in observability, reliability, and operational readiness for systems used in high-impact, high-availability healthcare workflows.

Role qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or equivalent practical experience.
  • 8+ years of progressive software engineering experience in Agile and/or iterative environments.
  • 6+ years of experience leveraging the following languages and frameworks:
    • Java
    • SQL databases
    • JavaScript
    • RESTful APIs
    • Web services
  • AWS experience required, including deploying, operating, and monitoring production workloads.
  • Experience with React is a plus.
  • Experience with Vue is a plus.
  • Demonstrated experience acting as a technical lead, setting direction, and influencing engineering standards without direct people management responsibility.

What you will be doing:

Technical Leadership & Mentorship

  • Serve as a technical leader on the team, setting engineering best practices for code quality, system design, testing, and operational readiness.
  • Coach and mentor less-experienced engineers, providing guidance through pairing, code reviews, and architectural discussions.
  • Lead design sessions, review proposed solutions, and present designs to architecture and cross-functional stakeholders.
  • Influence and refine team-level standards related to coding, testing, deployment, monitoring, and on-call readiness.

Design, Architecture & Development

  • Design, build, and maintain scalable, resilient services supporting the Authorizations suite using modern architecture patterns such as distributed systems and microservices.
  • Host, consume, and evolve RESTful APIs, ensuring they are secure, performant, and backward compatible.
  • Develop well-structured, reusable, maintainable, and intentionally designed code that aligns with team and organizational standards.
  • Analyze existing applications to identify technical debt, performance bottlenecks, or reliability concerns, and guide improvement efforts.
  • Write and optimize database queries and contribute to schema and table definition changes when needed.
  • Translate business and technical requirements into high-quality implementations while identifying gaps or risks in requirements early.

Observability, Monitoring & Reliability

  • Champion observability best practices, including logging, metrics, alerting, and tracing, to ensure system health and operational transparency.
  • Monitor application performance and reliability using appropriate tools, proactively identifying trends and potential failure points before they impact customers.
  • Partner with the team to define and refine SLIs, SLOs, and operational dashboards where applicable.
  • Participate in incident response and root cause analysis, helping drive systemic improvements rather than one-off fixes.

Quality, Testing & CI/CD

  • Ensure software quality through unit testing, integration testing, debugging, and code reviews.
  • Create, advise on, and maintain integration tests across the prior authorization suite to ensure system stability and reduce regression risk.
  • Leverage and improve CI/CD pipelines using Git, Jira, and AWS tooling to promote fast, reliable, and repeatable deployments.
  • Promote testability, automation, and quality-first thinking across the development lifecycle.

Collaboration & Documentation

  • Actively participate in pair programming, design discussions, and technical mentoring sessions.
  • Collaborate closely with product, QA, and operations partners to deliver reliable, well-observed solutions.
  • Write and maintain moderate to complex technical documentation, including design decisions, operational runbooks, and system behavior explanations.
  • Evaluate existing and emerging tooling and make data-driven recommendations to improve developer productivity, system reliability, and observability.
