We are currently seeking a Furnace Observer at our facility in Monroe, NC. As a Furnace Observer, you are an integral part of a successful team that is responsible for supporting our operations in the Melt Shop.

As a furnace observer, you will be responsible for assisting Melters in pouring molten metal into molds, removing hot, solidified metal from molds, and welding lifting lugs onto raw materials. A successful candidate will need to demonstrate an eagerness to learn and to be challenged. Strong communication, commitment to teamwork, and attention to detail are also important in this role.

Additional Responsibilities:



  • Work material through preliminary rolls following a prescribed pass sequence to obtain a specific cross section.
  • Hooking of material through rolling process in the prescribed pass sequence.
  • Discharge material from furnace to Rolling Mill to maintain a standard production rate as directed by Roller. Must make absolutely sure that all material loaded in furnace is removed prior to reloading to prevent alloy mix.
  • Assist in roll changes, disassembling of stands, changing of rolls and reassembling of stands following standard procedures.
  • Assist in maintaining and storing of mill equipment in good working condition in designated areas.
  • Operate gas fired furnaces to heat metal for Rolling following specific established methods per Mill Instructions.
  • Direct the loading of metal into furnaces in compliance with specifications.
  • Work with schedules, tables, charts and specific technical instructions to avoid any deviations in process.
  • Operate optical pyrometer to verify furnace temperature and record finish temperatures as specified by Mill Instructions.
  • Participate in Incident Investigation to determine Root Cause using Problem Solving Skills.
  • Participate in Standard Work events on processes to reduce cycle time and create a safer work area.
  • Follow all prescribed safety rules and regulations.
  • Operate auxiliary equipment as directed.

Preferred Qualifications:



  • High School Diploma or GE
  • At least one (1) year of manufacturing experience


Skills:



  • Basic math skills
  • Basic computer skills
  • Ability to read and understand instructions
  • Use measuring devices like gauges, meters, calipers and measuring tapes
  • Operate heavy machinery such as forklifts and cranes


  • Ability to lift objects weighing up to fifty (50) pounds, work in hot conditions and climb steps
