Job Summary

The Director of Network and Support Services leads the teams that build and maintain voice and data networks for the Caltech campus; and the teams who provide end user support services (Help Desk and Advanced Support). This position is responsible for financial oversight and reporting, purchasing and payment activities, building maintenance, and other administrative functions.

Job Duties
  • Manage data networks (wired, wireless, research) for the Caltech campus. This involves leading a team of network engineers to design, build and maintain the networking capabilities at Caltech. Includes vendor engagement, next generation architecture, participation in design of services for new construction and renovation, project management and scheduling, budget monitoring and reporting.
  • Manage voice networks and services for the Caltech campus. Leads a team of telephone technicians who manage on-premise equipment providing local, long distance and voice mail services.
  • Provide oversight for the end user support teams which include Help Desk support technicians, Strategize and promote processes, skills and tools that allow these teams to successfully support the Caltech community with their desktop, laptop, mobile device and application questions.
  • Work with Caltech CIO and IMSS director team on strategic planning and development of strategic focus areas. Submit budget requests, monitor and report on team budgets including a transition to multiple service centers. Draft department wide communications, promote and participate in employee development and team building.
  • Coach, advise, encourage and direct staff as needed across all of the Network and Data Services team.
  • Financial stewardship for serval budgets of ~$8M.
Basic Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in engineering, computer science, computer information systems, or a related field, or equivalent experience is required.
  • Minimum 7 years of progressively responsible management experience.
  • Proven work experiences with large research consortium such as CENIC or ESnet.
  • Ability to lead teams of highly technical personnel responsible for IT service implementation and upgrades.
  • Ability to lead teams with high levels of customer focused interactions.
  • Experience in establishing and maintaining partnerships and negotiating with vendors.
  • Experience managing large budgets.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills including the ability to give presentations.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to work calmly and effectively in pressure situations.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Master's degree in technology such as computer science, information systems, engineering, or other related field.
Hiring Range

$210,600 to $230,000 per year

The salary of the finalist(s) selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to, internal equity, experience, education, specialty and training.
