About the Job

Our research program focuses on 1) investigating the genetic and physiological bases of quantitative traits in wild rice and 2) evaluating and monitoring the genetic diversity and changing environment of natural stands of wild rice in Minnesota to ensure their protection and preservation. Find out more about our research program.

Our breeding program aims to improve the sustainability and growth of the Minnesota cultivated wild rice industry and its growers through the development of new and improved varieties. We are currently focused on improving shattering tolerance as well as disease resistance.
What are the updated job duties/responsibilities for this position?
40% - Land care, including mowing, trimming and general maintenance
30% - Research plot set up and tear down
30% - Assist with research activities as needed

Qualifications

Required Qualifications

  • 18 years and older
  • A valid driver's license
  • Have the ability to work outdoors in a natural environment
  • Ability to lift, push or pull up to 50lbs on occasion and lift push or pull 20lbs regularly

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience gathering and preparing soil, manure, forage, plant and grains samples for analysis
  • Appreciation for research activities and patience to work in research settings
  • Ability to work in teams and work collaboratively
  • Reliable, hard-working, and a positive attitude
About the Department

We are a breeding, genetics, and conservation research program in the Department of Agronomy and Plant Genetics at the University of Minnesota led by Dr. Jennifer Kimball. Our work centers on wild rice (Zizania palustris) as a cultivated crop as well as a natural resource in the state of Minnesota.

Pay and Benefits

Pay Range: $15.25 - $23.00 per hour,depending on education/qualifications/experience.
