ROLE OVERVIEW:

This position is responsible to inspect and supervise bridge crews performing construction, repair and maintenance of bridges, culverts, curbs, gutters, retaining walls and related concrete structures.

DUTIES AND/OR RESPONSIBILITIES (summary of components that make up the job)



  1. Oversee crews who place forms for molding concrete, install reinforcing steel, and convey, pour, finish, and cure concrete.
  2. Oversee construction of retaining walls, placement of steel and timber bridge sections and related structures.
  3. Direct crews, who spread, vibrate, screed, and float concrete to ensure that concrete is compacted to desired consistency and surface is finished to specified uniformity and smoothness.
  4. Oversee, assist, and inspect in using heavy machinery to dig up and grade existing material, form new concrete, ensure that everything meets DOT, ADA, and OSHA standards.
  5. Plan and organize work to maximize potential crew productivity by employing delay free production; maximizes equipment utilization levels by ensuring availability and operator effectiveness.
  6. Coordinate equipment and labor based on project needs.
  7. Manage suppliers and subcontractors in conjunction with the Project Manager to ensure safety, profit, scheduling, and customer satisfaction.
  8. Maintain respectable working relationships with all subcontractors, clients, and state personnel.
  9. Participate in pre and post construction meetings as needed.
  10. May investigate and respond to inquiries and complaints from the public.
  11. Timely and regular attendance is essential.
  12. Perform other duties as needed.


KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES (types and extent of knowledge, skills or abilities an incumbent must possess to complete the job responsibilities satisfactorily)



  1. Thorough knowledge of federal, state and county laws and ordinances related to road and bridge maintenance.
  2. Thorough knowledge of: methods, materials, machines, tools and equipment used in bridge construction, repair and maintenance; occupational hazards and modern safety practices in bridge construction, repair and maintenance work.
  3. Knowledge of: effective methods of supervising, evaluating, and training personnel engaged in bridge construction, repair and maintenance.
  4. Must have the ability to read and understand diagrams and blueprints.
  5. Must have the ability to read and understand a variety of permits related to work performed.
  6. Must be able to possess and maintain a clean driving record.


MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS (minimum educational, experience, or other relevant job requirements)



  1. Ability to provide and maintain proper licensure, medical card and acceptable driving record.
  2. 7 to 10 years of experience in construction and bridge building required.
  3. Must have an in-depth knowledge of bridge building and various structures.
