Job Overview

The Athletic Trainer Resident is an entry-level athletic training position with clinical program development and educational responsibilities within the Children's Hospital Colorado. This position will have a primary responsibility of supporting the physicians and staff with patient care in the Sports Medicine Center and Orthopedics Institute in compliance with HIPAA (Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act) and JCAHO (Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations).

This position is scheduled to close on April 30, 2026. Applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis, and the most qualified candidates will be contacted for an initial phone screening within two weeks of applying. Finalists will be invited to participate in a panel interview with the Sports Medicine Team in early May.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

  • Department/Location: Sports Medicine - location will vary across the network of care.
  • Job Details: Full-Time; 40 hours/week - eligible for benefits. This position is for one year only, with an approximate start date of July, 2026 and an approximate end date of June, 2027.
  • Shift: Position is for a 12 month term; Monday - Friday between normal business hours with minimal nights and weekends.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
An employee in this position may be called upon to do any or all of the following essential functions. These examples do not include all of the functions which the employee may be expected to perform.

1. Performs a physical examination of patient following the collection and documentation of the patient's medical history and briefs the attending physician The performance of concise and relevant presentations to the attending physician.
2. Orders diagnostic studies or other referrals under the direction of the attending physician.
3. Coordinates various aspects of the patient's care by answering treatment plan questions, scheduling physical therapy appointments, scheduling diagnostic imaging, providing instructions on symptomatic control, and information on scheduling surgery.
4. Provides initial rehabilitation exercises and the instruction, demonstration, and feedback on a patient's performance of the exercises as directed by the attending physician.
5. Fits and educates the patient on the use of splints, crutches, braces, wraps, and other various equipment as directed by the attending physician.
6. Removes cast and sutures and provides dressing changes to post-surgical patients as directed by the attending physician.
7. Prepares patients for injections that will be performed by the attending physician by cleaning and disinfecting the area to be injected and preparing materials to be utilized prior to and after the injection.
8. Medical documentation of each patient's visit following the appropriate templates.
9. Answer and return phone calls, along with properly documenting calls in the patient's chart for the sports medicine triage line.
10. Assist with the development of patient handouts, educational materials, research activities, community outreach and athletic training promotional materials for Children's Hospital Colorado Sports Medicine Center.
11. Attend internal and external educational lectures and conferences.
12. Meet with the residency program coordinator monthly for performance review.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Education: Bachelor's Degree in Athletic Training or a related field is required. Master's Degree preferred.
Experience: None required.
Certification(s): Certified as an Athletic Trainer by the Board of Certification (BOC) for Athletic Trainers and Basic Life Support (BLS)
Licensure(s): State of Colorado Department of Regulatory Agencies (DORA) Licenses for Athletic Trainer; Valid Colorado Driver's License

Salary Information
Pay is dependent on applicant's relevant experience. Hourly Range: $20.33 to $30.50
