Overview

Goldbelt Heritage Foundation (GHF) is a nonprofit organization committed to preserving and revitalizing the culture, language, and ways of knowing of the Tlingit people of Southeast Alaska. Through educational programming, language revitalization, arts, and community collaboration, GHF fosters Indigenous knowledge and strengthens cultural identity for current and future generations.

Summary:

The Language Specialist plays a crucial role in preserving, revitalizing, and promoting Indigenous languages. This position requires a deep understanding of Indigenous language structure, culture, and community, as well as experience in language documentation, teaching, and development.



Responsibilities

Essential Job Functions:

    Conduct language documentation and revitalization projects, including language mapping, audio/video recording, and transcription
  • Develop and implement language learning materials and curriculum
  • Teach Lingit language classes and workshops to community members of all ages
  • Provide language support services, including translation and interpretation
  • Collaborate with community members to document and preserve cultural knowledge associated with the language
  • Build and maintain relationships with language learners, elders, and community members
  • Support the development of Lingit language teachers for students of all ages
  • Participate in language conferences, workshops, and individual development to stay current on best practices
  • Develop and implement language technology initiatives, such as language dictionaries and online learning platforms
  • Contribute to the development of language policies and standards


Qualifications

Necessary Skills and Knowledge:

  • Fluency in Lingit
  • Strong understanding of Lingit language and culture
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Proficiency in computer software and language documentation tools

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Minimum 2-3 or more years of related experience
  • Experience in language documentation, teaching, or development
  • Must be willing to travel to local and regional events via plane, car, ferry, etc. as needed
  • Needs a valid AK driver's license

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Certificate or degree in linguistics, language education, Indigenous language, or related field preferred
  • Experience in community-based language revitalization
  • Knowledge of Indigenous language technology
  • Experience in curriculum development and instructional design

The salary for this position is $55,000+ DOE
