Primary Function

The Pharmacy Technician supports the onsite medical team in delivering safe, timely, and compliant pharmaceutical services to detainees. This role ensures proper medication management in accordance with detention center standards, and applicable federal and state regulations.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Prepare, label, and dispense prescription and over-the-counter medications per formulary and provider orders.
  • Maintain accurate inventory of medications, including controlled substances, and ensure secure storage in compliance with DEA and facility standards.
  • Coordinate with local retail pharmacies (e.g., Walgreens) for non-formulary or urgent medications within required timeframes (e.g., 12 hours for methadone therapy continuity).
  • Ensure all medication administration records (MARs) are accurate and updated in accordance with NCCHC/ACA standards.
  • Assist in preparing medical transfer summaries for detainees being moved to other facilities, including medication lists and dosing instructions.
  • Participate in audits and inspections to maintain compliance with detention standards and quality improvement programs.
  • Support continuous quality improvement (CQI) initiatives related to medication safety and pharmacy operations.
  • Assist in preparing medications for detainees requiring urgent care or hospital transfer.
  • Ensure availability of emergency medications and supplies as per facility protocols.
  • Work closely with physicians, nurses, and mental health providers to ensure continuity of care, including psychotropic medications and chronic disease management.
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to maintain accurate records.
  • Excellent organizational and time-management skills.
  • Ability to work in a secure environment and comply with all facility security protocols.
  • Effective communication skills for coordination with multidisciplinary teams.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and comply with federal privacy standards.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain favorable background investigations.
  • Must be proficient in English; able to receive and understand detailed information through oral and written communication.
  • Meet the requirements of the contract for all immunizations.
  • Must be at least 21 years of age.
  • Must be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident, resided in the U.S. for 3 years in the past 5 years.
  • Ability to work flexible hours, including nights, weekends, and holidays as needed.

Job Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent; completion of an accredited Pharmacy Technician program preferred.
  • Current state certification or registration as a Pharmacy Technician.
  • Minimum 1 year of experience in a clinical or correctional healthcare setting preferred.
  • Knowledge of federal and state pharmacy regulations, including controlled substance handling.
  • Familiarity with formulary and MedPAR system for off-site services authorization is a plus.
  • Have and maintain current certification in Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR).

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bilingual (English/Spanish or other relevant languages) preferred.
  • Has undergone a federal investigation at the level of Tier 2 or higher; has been granted favorable suitability/eligibility and has not had a break in service for more than 24 months.

Physical Requirements and Work Conditions

  • Ability to work in a secure facility environment.
  • Must complete provided training on case processing and administrative support tasks.
