McGraw Hill, the leading provider of digital and print educational resources, is looking for a User Experience Design Manager. The User Experience Design Manager leads and develops a team of designers to deliver highquality, usercentered design solutions across a business unit or product area. This role sets design standards, ensures consistency and quality across experiences, and partners closely with product, engineering, and business stakeholders to align design outcomes with customer needs and business priorities. As a people manager, the role is responsible for hiring, coaching, and developing talent; working with employees to establish annual goals and objectives; conducting timely performance evaluations; and monitoring and controlling team expenses. The User Experience Design Manager balances strategic direction with practical execution to drive iterative, impactful design results.

This is a remote position open to applicants authorized to work for any employer within the United States.

What you will be doing:

  • Leads and develops a team of designers to deliver highquality, usercentered design solutions across products and initiatives.
  • Partners with product, engineering, and business stakeholders to align design outcomes with customer needs and business priorities.
  • Establishes and upholds design standards to ensure consistency, quality, accessibility, and value across user experiences.
  • Guides the team in applying usercentered design and research practices to inform product decisions and validate solutions.
  • Lead and manage user experience design initiatives for the ALEKS product portfolio, driving innovative solutions that enhance learning outcomes and user engagement.
  • Encourages experimentation and iterative design, enabling teams to test ideas, learn quickly, and adjust direction as needed.
  • Balances shortterm delivery needs with longterm experience and design strategy.
  • Hires, onboards, coaches, and develops designers, fostering continuous skill growth and professional development.
  • Works with employees to establish annual goals and objectives, provides ongoing feedback, and conducts timely performance evaluations.
  • Monitors and manages team expenses in alignment with budget and organizational guidelines.

We're looking for someone with:

  • 8+ years of applicable experience, or 7+ years of applicable experience with 2+ years of managerial experience.
  • Bachelor's degree in a related field (e.g., Digital Design, HumanComputer Interaction, or equivalent practical experience); advanced degree preferred.
  • 7+ years of experience in user experience and interface design, with 2+ years of experience leading and developing high-performing design teams.
  • Ability to contribute directly to design work, including creating and reviewing sketches, wireframes, prototypes, and highfidelity designs.
  • Strong expertise in usercentered design practices, usability testing, and accessibility standards (e.g., WCAG and universal design principles).
  • Proven experience setting and upholding design standards while guiding teams through complex design problems and tradeoffs.
  • Handson proficiency with modern UX and visual design tools (e.g., Figma, Sketch, Adobe Creative Cloud, Axure or similar).
  • Experience partnering closely with product management and engineering teams in agile or scrumbased development environments.
  • Demonstrated people management experience, including hiring, coaching, performance feedback, and professional development.
  • Strong communication skills, with the ability to clearly articulate design rationale and recommendations to crossfunctional stakeholders.
  • Experience managing multiple priorities, deadlines, and budgets while balancing handson contribution with team leadership responsibilities.
  • Experience designing for education, learning, or other complex domaindriven products.
  • Experience working with distributed or remote teams across multiple time zones.
  • Up to 25% travel.

The pay range for this position is between $108,175 - $140,000 annually. However, base pay offered may vary depending on job-related knowledge, skills, experience, and location. An annual bonus plan may be provided as part of the compensation package, in addition to a full range of medical and/or other benefits, depending on the position offered.
