Job Responsibilities Supervisor Cytotechnology:

  • Provides direct supervision and leadership for the ICL Cytology Preparation Team, ensuring appropriate staffing, scheduling, competency assessment, workflow optimization, and adherence to established preparation protocols.

  • Manages and oversees all Cytologists across the Inova Health System, including performance management, coaching, counseling, disciplinary actions, competency validation, and professional development.

  • Coordinates, supervises, and standardizes all Fine Needle Aspiration (FNA) procedures across the Inova system, ensuring appropriate staffing, procedural quality, regulatory compliance, and collaboration with pathologists and clinical teams.

  • Serves as the system-wide subject matter expert for Cytology operations, acting as a clinical and technical resource for Cytologists, pathologists, laboratory leadership, and clinical stakeholders.

  • Ensures compliance with CLIA, CAP, Joint Commission, and other regulatory and accrediting requirements related to Cytology and FNA services; leads inspections, audits, corrective actions, and ongoing quality improvement initiatives.

  • Takes ownership for the selection, validation, and implementation of Cytology methodologies, instrumentation, and preparation techniques appropriate for the patient populations served across the system.

  • Oversees and ensures successful participation in quality control, quality assurance, and proficiency testing programs for all Cytology services.

  • Maintains high visibility in Cytology work areas and provides leadership for daily operational issues across all shifts and locations, ensuring continuity of service and timely case turnaround.

  • Leads system-wide efforts to standardize Cytology workflows, policies, and procedures, implementing process improvements to enhance quality, efficiency, and patient safety.

  • Compiles, analyzes, and reports Cytology statistical data for the entire Inova Health System, including workload metrics, productivity, quality indicators, FNA utilization, and performance benchmarks.

  • Utilizes Cytology data and trend analysis to support strategic planning, staffing models, budget development, and resource allocation, and presents findings to laboratory and system leadership as required.

  • Collaborates with pathologists and clinical teams to critically analyze patient data, support diagnostic accuracy, and ensure appropriate utilization of Cytology and FNA services.

  • Assists in the development and management of budgetary and financial targets related to Cytology operations.

  • Monitors industry trends, regulatory changes, and best practices in Cytology and FNA services, recommending and implementing appropriate system-wide responses.

  • Performs other duties as assigned in support of departmental, laboratory, and organizational objectives

Minimum Qualifications:

  • 4 years of Extensive experience and knowledge of Cytology laboratory processes, advanced troubleshooting skills, leadership skills, strong interpersonal, communication and team building skills.

Education:

  • Baccalaureate degree from a regionally accredited college/university in Cytology, Medical Laboratory Science/Medical Technology, or Histology

Certification:

  • ASCP Board certification consistent with scope of Cytology Supervisor responsibility to include CT, SCT, IAC, HTL, or MLS
