DESCRIPTION

The Clinical Nurse Educator (CNE) for the Emergency Department (ED) and Emergency Department Inpatient Unit (EDIP) is a key member of the Emergency Services leadership team responsible for advancing clinical practice, promoting professional development, and ensuring high-quality patient care through evidence-based education, competency development, and skills validation.As a system resource, the CNE primarily supports the La Jolla ED and EDIP while also providing education, training, and consultation to ED teams at UCSD Health East Campus and UCSD Health Hillcrest. The educator collaborates closely with other ED educators to ensure consistency and alignment in educational programs across UCSD Health emergency departments.

The CNE designs, delivers, and evaluates education for ED and EDIP clinicians, leading onboarding, orientation, and training for nurses and technical staff. This role develops programs for newly licensed RNs, supports cross-training initiatives, and facilitates annual skills training to maintain clinical competency and professional growth.

The CNE evaluates staff competencies, develops validated competency tools aligned with regulatory standards, and mentors staff in evidence-based practice and professional advancement. The role also supports regulatory readiness, quality improvement, and patient safety initiatives while collaborating with Emergency Services leadership, educator teams, and system committees to promote clinical excellence.

The Clinical Nurse Educator (CNE) for the Emergency Department (ED) and Emergency Department Inpatient Unit (EDIP) is a key member of the Emergency Services leadership team. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) from an accredited school of Nursing.

  • Registered Nurse (RN) license issued by the State of California.

  • BLS and ACLS certifications at time of hire with commitment to get ART within six months of hire date.

  • Current PALS certification, or must obtain within six (6) months of hire date.

  • Minimum 5 years of Emergency Department RN experience.

  • Experience in a large academic medical center.

  • Experience precepting nurses.

  • Advanced knowledge of developing and delivering clinical nursing education and training material for orientation, class training, skills/competency learning, and leadership development.

  • Advanced interpersonal skills to participate in the development and delivery of new education and training programs and to develop positive working relationships with nursing staff and leadership.

  • Advanced organizational and project management skills to lead a team, prioritize tasks, and see projects through from inception to completion on schedule.

  • Advanced skills in written and verbal communications to convey the most complex clinical, technical, educational, and training information in a clear and concise manner, and to produce high-quality reports, documentation, and presentations.

  • Advanced knowledge of a broad spectrum of professional nursing practices and issues and in-depth knowledge in a clinical nursing specialty area.

  • Advanced knowledge of methodology for conducting evidence-based research, data collection, analysis, and reporting.

  • Advanced critical thinking and problem-solving skills to manage multiple levels of information and responsibilities, and to quickly assess highly complex and urgent problems to develop an expedient path of resolution.

  • Experience and proficiency in using digital tools, LMS platforms, and simulation technology.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Master's degree in Nursing, Education, Leadership, or related field.

  • Lean Six Sigma training or certification.

  • Specialty emergency/critical care certifications such as CEN, CPEN, or CCRN.

  • Inpatient nursing experience.

SPECIAL CONDITIONS
  • Must be able to work various hours and locations based on business needs.

Pay Transparency Act

Annual Full Pay Range: $132,600 - $259,800 (will be prorated if the appointment percentage is less than 100%)

Hourly Equivalent: $63.51 - $124.43

Factors in determining the appropriate compensation for a role include experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. The Hiring Pay Scale referenced in the job posting is the budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position. The Annual Full Pay Range may be broader than what the University anticipates to pay for this position, based on internal equity, budget, and collective bargaining agreements (when applicable).
