Applications will be accepted on an ongoing basis until the requisition is closed.

At Blue Origin, we envision millions of people living and working in space for the benefit of Earth. We're working to develop reusable, safe, and low-cost space vehicles and systems within a culture of safety, collaboration, and inclusion. Join our team of problem solvers as we add new chapters to the history of spaceflight!

This role supports the development and operations of New Glenn, a single-configuration, heavy-lift orbital launch vehicle capable of routinely carrying people and payloads to low-Earth orbit, geostationary transfer orbit, cislunar, and beyond. Its first stage is fully reusable, and the vehicle was designed from the beginning to be human-capable.

As part of a hardworking, passionate, and accomplished team of experts, you will be responsible for the design, analysis, development, testing, and qualification of structural subsystems for New Glenn's second stage in support of design, manufacturing and operations. In addition, you will be responsible for creating design documentation that is concise and accurate and to perform peer reviews of designs and reports generated by other team members. You will also be expected to provide design guidance to junior engineers. This position will directly impact the history of space exploration and will require your dedicated commitment and detailed attention towards safe and repeatable spaceflight.

As we transition from the initial design, release, and qualification testing of the flight hardware to the production and operational phase you will be responsible for supporting production issues, ongoing testing and mission operations.

In this position you will: apply standard engineering techniques to design, install, modify, analyze, repair and test aerospace structural systems; development, release, and support of engineering artifacts across the development cycle to support hardware fabrication, assembly, verification, test and operations; implement operating procedures, resolve system malfunctions, and provide technical information; research and analyze customer design proposals, specifications, manuals, and other data to evaluate the feasibility, cost, and maintenance requirements of designs or applications.

We are looking for someone to apply their technical expertise, leadership skills, and commitment to quality to positively impact safe human spaceflight. Passion for our mission and vision is required!

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
  • Lead structural design and configuration of pressurized and unpressurized launch vehicle structures, including interfaces and clearances
  • Perform detailed design, analysis, development, and sustainment of primary and secondary flight structures
  • Conduct research, concept development, and trade studies with emphasis on manufacturability, cost reduction, and performance
  • Develop 3D models, detailed drawings, assemblies, installation layouts, and interface control documents
  • Create test plans, specifications, and technical documentation to support flight hardware development
  • Plan, coordinate, execute, and analyze subsystem and structural tests
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to select materials, manufacturing processes, suppliers, and tooling for world-class aerospace hardware
  • Maintain and report technical status, schedules, and budgets
  • Mentor and technically support junior engineers and integration teams
  • Identify opportunities for process improvement and operational cost savings
  • Support development and modification of production equipment and tooling
  • Prepare and present technical content to internal and external stakeholders
  • Perform configuration, access, and clearance studies and develop solutions for mission-unique requirements
  • Partner with internal and external organizations across design, manufacturing, and mission integration
Minimum Qualifications:
  • Passion for our mission: Millions of people living and working in space!
  • Minimum of a B.S. degree in engineering and 5+ years of related experience with aircraft, spacecraft, or launch vehicle structures
  • Experience on launch vehicles, aircraft or similar. Hands on experience with hardware "on the production floor" and/or "in service"
  • Design of minimal-mass structure, especially with aim to reduce cost and manufacturing time.
  • Experience with material development and structural testing
  • Strong understanding of structural design and analysis principles
  • Structural design experience using CAD (Creo/Windchill preferred), hand calculations, and FEA tools
  • Experience working in a multi-functional organization to develop designs and produce world-class engineered products
  • Strong understanding of metallic design fundamentals
  • Experience in bolted joint design and analysis
  • Experience with Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerance analysis (ASME Y14.5)
  • Familiarity with ASME Y14.100 and Y14.41
  • Ability to take ownership of the hardware lifecycle from requirements definition through concept development, design, analysis, testing, qualification, and integration onto a launch vehicle
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
Preferred Qualifications:
  • MS degree in engineering or equivalent
  • Experience designing for manufacturability and value engineering, with focus on cost reduction and build time hour optimization.
  • Experience designing hot and cryo structures
  • Experience with rapid development techniques for hardware.
  • Demonstrated expertise with any industry standard analysis codes: Ansys, Nastran, Optistruct, LS Dyna, Hypermesh, Hypersizer, NASGRO, Abaqus
  • Familiarity with buckling, fatigue and/or fracture failure modes
  • Experience or expertise with fabrication of large-scale metallic aerospace structures
  • Knowledge of systems engineering practices, fabrication and integration processes, and quality control
  • Experience in large scale structural test and instrumentation
  • Working knowledge of MATLAB
