We are offering an excellent opportunity for a Marketing Specialist to cultivate and strengthen the Department of Surgery's visibility in the Tucson community and nationwide, through the management of strategic communications.

The Marketing Specialist will collaborate regularly with our surgeons, researchers, administrative staff, hospital marketing and communications, external vendors, and other department stakeholders to help develop and execute a strategic marketing plan. This includes analyzing the effectiveness of current external/internal communication strategies; proposing new ideas to reach target audiences; and creating compelling, brand aligned and audience-appropriate content. This position requires a high degree of professionalism. Exercising initiative, resourcefulness, integrity, and good judgment will be essential.

Duties & Responsibilities
  • Create and implement marketing plans for department with guidance of department chair, administrative leadership, division chiefs, and program managers.
  • Plan, manage, and execute cross-channel social media campaigns (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, LinkedIn) to highlight department divisions, programs, and news. Optimize content across channels and monitor social performance to determine which strategies are most effective for growing our audience and strengthening engagement.
  • Promote department research and educational programs through content marketing, crafting compelling stories to share on the Quick Snips blog and other department and institutional channels.
  • Develop, pitch and draft press releases for significant research or other department news. Serve as a contact to help field media inquiries.
  • Collaborate with College of Medicine - Tucson, University of Arizona Health Sciences, and University of Arizona partners to further expand reach of content and promote collaboration between related departments or programs.
  • Work with hospital marketing, communications, and business development teams to address clinical marketing needs, including supporting strategic collateral creation.
  • Develop and create quarterly department Quick Snips e-newsletter and actively grow newsletter audience.
  • Write marketing and promotional copy, including copy for web pages, social media, department announcements, and print collateral.
  • Help plan and drive promotion of department events.
  • Represent department at academic and community outreach events, including distributing marketing collateral and promotional products, live Tweeting, and photography.
  • Encourage UArizona brand awareness throughout the department. Provide education, resources, and guidance to align marketing and communications materials with institutional brand standards.
  • Manage department print and promotional product requests, working with internal and external university-approved vendors as needed.
  • Participate in meetings and conferences pertinent to area of responsibility.
  • Investigate, evaluate, and help resolve social media and marketing problems or situations as they arise in the department.
  • Design and produce visually compelling marketing materials, including Annual Reports, brochures, flyers, rack cards, presentations, and other branded collateral.
  • Translate content and data into clear, engaging layouts that align with organizational messaging and brand standards.
  • Develop and maintain templates and style elements to ensure consistency across print and digital assets.
  • Prepare print-ready and web-optimized files, coordinating revisions, proofing, and production details as needed.
  • Utilize Adobe Creative Suite (Illustrator, InDesign) and Canva to create, edit, and manage design assets.
  • Collaborate with marketing and program teams to conceptualize visuals that support campaigns and communications goals.
  • Maintain and update website content on a weekly basis, ensuring accuracy, timeliness, and consistency across all pages.
  • Apply SEO best practices, including keyword optimization, metadata management, alt text, and content structure to improve search visibility and performance.
  • Coordinate with internal stakeholders to gather updates, verify information, and prioritize content changes.
  • Troubleshoot minor formatting or display issues; familiarity with basic HTML is a plus.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent advanced learning attained through professional level experience.
  • Minimum of 3 years of relevant work experience, or equivalent combination of education and work experience.
Preferred Qualifications

  • Degree and experience in Marketing, Communications, Liberal Arts, Journalism or related field.
  • Academic medicine experience.
