The Fabrication Engineering Group provides rapid fabrication, assembly, integration, and testing of advanced hardware prototypes for national security applications. Examples include the precision machining fiber mounts for airborne high-energy laser systems, multi-functional structures using additive processes for ground-based radar systems, custom printed circuit boards (PCBs) for space-borne data processing, and highly integrated mechanical packaging for undersea communication terminals. Core mechanical competencies span precision fabrication, additive manufacturing, and 5-axis machining. The group concentrates on high-complexity parts, quick-turn capabilities, and activities that require concurrent engineering with program teams. Core PCB capabilities include design for manufacturability (DFM), automated solder paste dispensers, precise pick-n-place machines, and automated optical inspection systems. Assembly, integration, and test capabilities include integration spaces, clean rooms, vibration testing, thermal testing, and space simulation chambers. The Group focuses on state-of-the-art prototyping capabilities, technical excellence, exceptional collaboration, and outstanding operation.

Job Description

The individual who assists in laboratory or research work and operates experimental and technical equipment under the supervision of scientific personnel or technicians of higher grade. Must be able to work for periods of time without supervision. Work assignments include:



  • Assist engineers and technicians of a higher grade with assembly and integration of complex electro/optical/mechanical systems and subsystems
  • Precision, quality, and attention to detail are very important.
  • Support the assembly of chassis, cables/harnesses, and printed circuit boards, and may include optical sub-systems requiring precise handling, alignment, and calibration for proper operation and reliability.
  • Interpret drawings, models, specifications, verbal instructions or sketches, to make tools, support equipment and test fixtures as required, or to modify parts to ensure proper fit and function.
  • The Individual will be supported with first-rate hardware, test infrastructure, talented peers, and a work environment that values excellence and continuous learning.

Requirements

  • Graduation from a two-year technical school or equivalent experience as verified by references.
  • A minimum of two years of relevant experience in electro-mechanical fabrication, assembly or machining/mechanical experience in lieu of technical school.
  • A candidate with prior experience in assembly and machining for aerospace and/or national laboratory programs will be given very strong consideration.
  • Experience with model base design (MBD), Cleanroom and ESD protocols a plus.
  • Good communication skills are needed. The individual should show a willingness and capability to learn about new assembly and test processes to support assembly, integration and testing applications.

Hiring Range: $33.18 - $37.73
