Composed of more than 2,500 faculty physicians and researchers, more than 1,300 students, and more than 6,000 staff, the Duke University School of Medicine along with the Duke University School of Nursing, Duke University Health System and the Private Diagnostic Clinic (PDC) comprise Duke Health. a world-class academic medical center. The Health System encompasses Duke University Hospital, Duke Regional Hospital, Duke Raleigh Hospital, Duke Primary Care, Duke Home and Hospice, Duke Health and Wellness, and multiple affiliations.

Occupational Summary

The Medical Physics Residency is a clinical training program to prepare for ABR board certification and independently practice safe clinical medical physics. The minimum length of the training program is 2 years of clinical training and may extend up to 4 years depending on the inclusion of research components. The 2-year clinical training is highly structured and divided into multiple clinical rotations with a supervisor assigned to oversee the progress for each rotation. Other staff physicists and departmental staff will support in covering the training topics. The resident will perform assigned duties under the direct supervision of the rotation supervisor and resident program associate directors and/or director.

Work Performed

The rotation training activities may include, but are not be limited to, patient-specific, monthly, daily, and annual QA, machine and equipment acceptance/commissioning, imaging technology, treatment or diagnostic planning, special procedures, and radiation safety. The focus will be primarily on tasks and projects related to medical physics support of clinical operations at Duke University Hospital and other affiliated Duke facilities.

The Medical Physics Resident will be required to attend designated didactic courses, clinical seminars, and follow a rotation schedule for the 2-year clinical training. The didactic coursework is waved if the resident has a CAMPEP certificate, MS, or PhD. Depending on the departmental framework, the optional Research component may be selected before or after the start of the residency program. If the in-depth medical physics research component is included in the program, dedicated research time will be assigned and research productivity (e.g., scientific presentations and publications) is expected.

At the completion of each rotation, the Residency Program Committee and the rotation supervisor will evaluate the residents performance, which consists of reviewing the rotation training record and training objectives, reviewing the rotation reports submitted by the resident, and the required oral exam(s) or each rotation. In addition, the residents progress is discussed in regular meetings with rotation supervisor(s) and monthly meeting with the program committee. Upon the successful completion of all clinical rotation requirements, the Certificate of Completion of the Duke Medical Physics residency program will be awarded.
