GENERAL SUMMARY:

The BPN Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT) performs medical laboratory tests, procedures, and analyses to provide data for diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of disease.



PRINCIPAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

1. *Commits to the mission, vision, beliefs and consistently demonstrates our core values.

2. *Performs routine laboratory tests according to laboratory standards, policies and procedures.

3. *Analyzes test results and enters data into the computer using laboratory standards, policies, and procedures.

4. *Performs and analyzes quality control measures to ensure accurate clinical data.

5. *Maintains competency and proficiency on all laboratory instrumentation and procedures; performs and documents preventive maintenance on laboratory instruments and equipment, troubleshooting problems as necessary.

6. *Communicates with coworkers, clients and leadership by transmitting appropriate ideas, information and opinions clearly and concisely; maintains employee, patient, client and corporate confidentiality.

7. *Performs general housekeeping tasks to maintain work area order; maintains adequate supplies in the work area.

8. *Participates in cross-training within laboratory divisions.

9. Assists in training new employees and students.

10. Accesses and administers drugs and biologicals that are pertinent to essential job functions in accordance with Medical Center procedures.

11. Performs other related projects and duties as assigned.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

1. Knowledge of clinical laboratory test procedures, standards and equipment.

2. Knowledge of computer hardware equipment and software applications relevant to work functions.

3. Skill in the use and preventative maintenance of laboratory instruments and equipment.

4. Ability to work with mathematical concepts and apply such concepts to practical situations.

5. Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.

6. Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.

7. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with all levels of personnel, medical staff, volunteers and ancillary departments.

8. Ability to prioritize work demands and work with minimal supervision.

9. Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists.

10. Ability to maintain confidentiality relevant to sensitive information.

11. Ability to work as a team member.

12. Ability to maintain regular and punctual attendance.



EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

Associate's degree in Medical Laboratory Technology or related laboratory science from a two-year accredited college or CLIA- approved Military MLT program required. American Society of Clinical Pathologists (ASCP) certification as an MLT (ASCP) or equivalency preferred.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

(Physical Requirements are based on federal criteria and assigned by Human Resources upon review of the Principal Job Functions.)

(DOT) - Characterized as medium work requiring exertion of 20 to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or 10 to 25 pounds of force frequently, and/or a greater than negligible up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.

Must be able to distinguish and discriminate between colors.
