The Firing & Embedded Systems group (7620) has a portfolio that covers diverse opportunities across Sandias Nuclear Deterrence (ND) mission and various Strategic Partnership Programs (SPP) supporting work across the U.S. government. This posting for a Systems Engineering role within the W93 Firing Sets and Surveillance (7623) department. If hired, a qualified candidate will support a variety of ND components including the firing sets.

On any given day, one may be called upon to:

  • Work with next-level-of-assembly and your multi-disciplinary component team to define its complete requirements set.
  • Work with your component design team to derive and engineer sub-component requirements from the component-level architecture/design, and manage them
  • Architect or execute a systematic approach to project execution.
  • Qualify a product (populating requirements maps, writing test plans, and reviewing/analyzing test data to verify requirements are met).
  • Evaluate proposed requirements/requirement-changes, for impacts, including impacts to qualification basis and verifiability.
  • Lead and engage in the development of system or subsystem level requirements.
  • Lead qualification of a product (lead requirements mapping, developing test plans, and reviewing/analyzing test data to verify requirements are met), including identification of Critical Performance Parameters, with support from Statistics organization, as needed.
  • Supporting development of product acceptance criteria/requirements to ensure that yielded product meets design expectations, while accounting for measurement uncertainties/tolerances.

This position will require occasional travel.

Salary Range

$102,400 - $199,700

*Salary range is estimated, and actual salary will be determined after consideration of the selected candidate's experience and qualifications, and application of any approved geographic salary differential.

Qualifications We Require

  • A Bachelor's degree in a relevant discipline, or an equivalent combination of directly relevant education and engineering or scientific experience that demonstrates the knowledge, skills, and ability to perform independent research and development.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a DOE Q clearance
Qualifications We Desire

The ideal R&D S&E Systems Engineer candidate for Sandia National Laboratories will in addition possess the following:

  • Graduate degree in Engineering or a highly related field where an independent research project was a graduation requirement (e.g., independent project, thesis, or dissertation)
  • Experience working with Nuclear Security Enterprise (NSE) laboratories and plants including Pantex, Kansas City National Security Campus (KCNSC), Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL), Los Alamos National Laboratory, and Kansas City National Security Campus/New Mexico Operations (KCNSC/NMO)
  • Experience working on engineering design, qualification, production, or related modeling/simulation projects
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills, ability to work effectively in multidisciplinary teams

Also, for this posting we are seeking individuals with the following experience:

  • Direct experience supporting Nuclear Deterrence or Strategic Partnership Projects as a Systems Engineer
  • Experience with:
    • Electrical Engineering practices
    • The qualification of ND components, requirements verification, and test planning
    • Firing subsystems
    • Environmental testing and destructive testing of components, subsystems or systems. This may include experience in design, development, and procurement of fixtures
  • Demonstrated ability to negotiate competing requirements to give the best system-level outcome
  • Familiarity with requirements management and related software (DOORS, Team Center, or equivalent)
  • Demonstrated experience with Model-Based Systems Engineering and associated tools (e.g., Genesys, Magic Draw, sysML, etc)
  • Experience coordinating with test facilities both internal and external to Sandia National Laboratories
  • Competency with:
    • Programming languages for automated batch data extraction and waveform analysis
    • Statistical/data visualization software (e.g. JMP, Minitab, R Statistical Software)
  • Active DOE Q-Level security clearance
  • Ability to obtain and maintain Sigma 15 access

Security Clearance
