Job Summary
The Patient Care Technician is responsible for assisting registered professional nurses in the care of the patient. He/she performs all of the essential generic job functions as listed below.
Essential Generic Job Functions
- Welcomes patients and checks for proper identification bracelets.
- Prepares the patient for assessment/admission, physical examination, and procedures.
- Draws intravenous or capillary blood from newborn through geriatric aged patients using proper aseptic collection techniques, assures appropriate labeling and processing of specimens to expedite throughput of patients.
- Performs EKG for patients as directed.
- Assures the presence, functionality, and cleanliness of all necessary equipment.
- Assists in the transport of patients to departments or units upon request.
- Assists with preparation as necessary, assuring the patient is assisted with meals/or fed as needed.
- Checks inventory of assigned area and restocks as directed.
- Ensures room environment is prepared for admission.
- Provides direct hygiene and comfort care to patients including bathing, toileting, oral hygiene, incontinent care, and bed making.
- Takes vital signs on admission under the direction of the RN, documents accordingly, and notifies the RN of results, assists with admission as appropriate inclusive of checking of patient ID bands.
- Performs and documents glucose finger sticks and collects other specimens as directed.
- Obtains and documents daily patient weights and observes and documents patient's intake and output.
- Provides a safe patient environment by answering call lights promptly, communicating with the RN immediately for any change in the patient's condition.
- Identifies the needs of the patient population served and modifies and delivers care specific to those needs, including age, culture, language, hearing and/or visually impaired, etc.
- Communicates with the patient, parent, and/or primary caregiver(s) at their level (developmental/age, educational, literacy, etc.).
- Regular contact with Medical Center personnel, patients, and visitors.
Education Requirement
Required Education:
- High school diploma or GED.
- Patient Care Technician Program.
Preferred Education: N/A
Required Certifications & Licensure
- EKG Course Certificate.
- Phlebotomy Course Certificate.
- BLS.
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities
- BLS-aha Required.
- Minimum 1 year of (recent) prior PCT experience in an Acute Care Facility (prior ED experience preferred).
- Must have strong (verifiable) competency in the following areas:
- Phlebotomy (certification required).
- EKG (certification required).
- Vitals.
- Glucometer.
- Checking blood sugar.
- Worker will not be required to float outside of ED.
- 13 weeks from start. Every other Weekend Required. 2/3 upcoming Holidays. No On-Call.
- Must have a proven track record of reliability with patient care and attendance.
- Must have experience to keep pace with high volume and fast-paced environment.
- Prior Epic experience preferred but not required (will be Epic trained).
- Must be highly reliable and be available to work all days other than those that were pre-disclosed prior to offer.
Schedule Notes
Evening Shift: 3:15pm-11:45pm. 5x8s. 13 weeks. Department: Med Surg Every other weekend. Holidays required. No On-Call Required. Float Requirement: as needed. Must have 1 year of experience.
