Overview

Microsoft AI is seeking a Director of Product Marketing & GotoMarket for Frontier Models & Innovation-a hybrid Product Marketing Manager (PMM)/Go-to-Market (GTM) leadership role that defines how our next generation of frontier models are positioned, understood, adopted, and scaled globally. This role sits at the intersection of upstream product marketing, deep technical credibility, creative GTM orchestration, and employer branding.

You will shape the narrative and strategic frame for frontier model innovation, influence product direction through insight and competitive clarity, and lead the global launch engine that brings breakthrough research to market. You will elevate the work of our most senior engineers and researchers, translate complex model capabilities into industryshaping stories, and position Microsoft AI as the destination for the world's top technical talent.

You will also champion our humanistic AI approach-ensuring interpretability, safety, and human flourishing are embedded in both product strategy and every external narrative.

Responsibilities

Lead PMM for Frontier Models

    • Define the positioning, value propositions, and competitive frame for each frontier model family.
    • Build the upstream narrative architecture: customer insight, usecase mapping, differentiation, and "mustbetrue" product conditions.
    • Partner with Research and Product to influence roadmap, evaluation priorities, and model behaviors based on developer, enterprise, and researcher needs.
    • Develop the messaging hierarchy and content strategy that anchors all GTM, comms, and ecosystem engagement.

Own Global GTM Strategy & Launch Execution

    • Build and lead the full GTM strategy for foundational model releases, including access tiers, commercialization strategy, and launch sequencing.
    • Architect breakthrough, memorable launch moments that cut through noise and set new industry standards.
    • Orchestrate crossfunctional execution across research, engineering, product, comms, policy, and developer relations.

Elevate Technical Voices

    • Partner with principal engineers, distinguished researchers, and product leaders to amplify their work through talks, authored papers, demos, benchmarks, and media engagements.
    • Turn internal excellence into external thought leadership that attracts elite technical talent and shapes industry discourse.

Craft Technical & Humanistic AI Narratives

    • Translate complex model innovations into rigorous, credible stories for researchers, Chief Technical Officer (CTOs), policymakers, and technical press.
    • Ensure every narrative foregrounds our humanistic AI principles and reinforces Microsoft's leadership in responsible frontier innovation.

Build Thought Leadership & Community Programs

    • Design and run fellowships, grants, open benchmarks, hackathons, and visiting researcher programs that accelerate adoption and deepen engagement.
    • Grow a thriving ecosystem of developers, researchers, and partners around our frontier models.

Measure, Learn, Optimize

    • Define Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) for adoption, community engagement, partner integrations, and talent attraction.
    • Continuously refine PMM and GTM strategy based on data, qualitative insight, and competitive signals.

Qualifications

Required/Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree in Marketing, Computer Science, Business or related field AND 6+ years experience in technical product marketing
    • OR Master's Degree in Marketing, Computer Science, Business or related field AND 4+ years experience in technical product marketing
    • OR equivalent experience.

Additional or Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree in Marketing, Computer Science, Business or related field AND 12+ years experience in technical product marketing
    • OR Master's Degree in Marketing, Computer Science, Business or related field AND 8+ years in technical product marketing
    • OR equivalent experience.
  • 10+ years in product marketing, GTM, developer relations, or research program leadership, with 4+ years focused on AI/ Machine Learning (ML) platforms or foundational models.
  • Experience in ML fundamentals, transformer architectures, scaling, finetuning, and evaluation.
  • Experience shaping product narratives, influencing roadmap, and driving adoption of technical platforms.
  • Experience partnering with senior technical leaders and translate their work into external recognition and hiring outcomes.

Product Marketing IC5 - The typical base pay range for this role across the U.S. is USD $130,900 - $251,900 per year. There is a different range applicable to specific work locations, within the San Francisco Bay area and New York City metropolitan area, and the base pay range for this role in those locations is USD $165,600 - $272,300 per year.
